Re: QOTW: What tech projects are you undertaking during lockdown?

Its all finally pushed me to upgrade my home pc so I can work from home.
The current one is an Athlon 5050e 2.6gig dual core monster with a whole 8 jiggerbytes of DDR2 oomph

    And underway is a build for a Ryzen 3600, msi x470 gaming plus max, 16gb 3600mhz (c18 I think) ram and a m2 (pcie3) drive.

The old mobo had integrated gpu so I'll take out the NVidia GT730 and use that for starters as its only for work atm, but if/when I can afford it I'll prob shove something in like a 2070 or what ever is around that's on any good.

Just waiting for the new PSU now, due today

Re: QOTW: What tech projects are you undertaking during lockdown?

After a month of my new PC build being air-cooled (and a bit noisy under load on the stock RGB cooler), I've slapped a Fractal Celsius S36 on my Ryzen 3900x.

There's no RGB bling, it's super quiet and at a very fair price for something this effective. Also significantly easier to install than all-in-one coolers I've used in the past.

I've also been having an amazing amount of fun with my first Lego Technic kit - it's sort of the missing link between Lego and Meccano that I wish had been around when I was a kid.

It is an awesome game though, my favourite level is K/DA Pop/stars which I can now get through on Expert level. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UOxkGD8qRB4)

One project I should do is modify the lighting where the Rift is as I keep hitting the lampshade.

Assuming you have Steam, do install "The Lab". It is free, and has some decent stuff in it I still go back to. https://store.steampowered.com/app/450390/The_Lab/
Whilst I don't play League/LoL anymore since my uni days, I do enjoy their soundtrack and that one is indeed epic! I'm not sure how many times I've listened to it already and combining it with Beat Saber will just be even more amazing.

I've luckily just received the package this morning and got the Rift set up in my room a few hours ago. I initially didn't even realise that one of the sensors wasn't even plugged in correctly yet I managed to play Beat Saber fine, granted I was only playing 'Normal' difficulty. I'm now trying 'Hard' difficulty and will hopefully one day reach Expert and Expert+.

I've already gone and downloaded lots of custom songs so I'll see how that goes. This will definitely keep me occupied during my non-working stay at home hours.

Ah The Lab is what I played on my friends VR headset! He has a Vive and I remember that was indeed fun!

I've ordered a Cooler Master NR400 case to replace my current case as my Hackintosh is running too hot.

Re: QOTW: What tech projects are you undertaking during lockdown?

Last weeks tech project was hand sanitiser. Luckily we ran low on IPA a week before the lock down so have a few litres in stock. Our bulk suppliers sold out of glycerine in a matter of days, so we got that from a vaping supplies shop. The hardest item to come by were the bottles to put it in. Ended up re-using some shampoo bottles from a hotel stay.

This week I am working on a non-contact UVc sanitiser. Ready made devices are being seized at customs but I managed to get hold of a bare lamp - not what we ordered but close enough. The wiring looks decidedly dodgy for 220VAC but I should be able to sort it out. Wish I had a 3D printer and the time to learn how to use it.

The project I was working on, an integration with our cloud accounting system, has been put aside as we won't need it unless we can find ways to keep the business going.

Had one for a little while now, very decent case for the price.
Grab that. Get that. Check it out. Bring that here. Grab anything useful. Take anything good.

Nothing new, just a good clean, although the dust filters do a pretty good job. The main project is to work my way through scanning a couple of shoe boxes full of old photos - something I've been meaning to do for years but never got around to it.

I have cleaned out the store room and turned it into a study/workshop and now plan on building PCs until I run out of old parts to work with. I've got 11 cases, at least 14 motherboards, over 20 CPUs, a crate of GPU/LAN/USB/SCSI/sound cards, and a literal bucket full of RAM :-D
