Not to mention the build I'm looking at is already hitting around 4-5k in price even with just a 3950x so I'd say that isn't really a solid argument anymore.

Then the same build would be in the 3.5-4.5k price range if you put a 4 core in there. Having used a 3950X in a compute monster that came in well under 2k I can only assume you are putting a monster GPU in there instead of the RX580 I specced (because I wasn't expecting the machine to need any GPU grunt). You can't blame the 3950X for GPU prices.

On the flip side, my recent Ryzen 3600 machine has 32GB of ECC ram in it so the workstation/server lines are blurring a bit. I like that.
