I wish they would launch a Windows hello webcam, I don't trust the third party ones
Only HD? The Logitech Brio is a decent Windows Hello 4K camera, certified for Teams etc also.
High FPS would be nice in a webcam, for head/face tracking.
Will it support Windows Hello?
Good, quality Microsoft HD Webcam. But it does not support 4K video rec!
The Lifecam Studio is an enormously hackable design. I've got about half a dozen - none of which is actually used as a webcam. Easy conversion to machine vision and eff nose how many other uses. Great sensor and good optics (which can easily be swapped out if you need to).
Astronomers are partial to them too, again very well suited to the requisite mods.
Have a couple of Brios too but the MS camera is more versatile - in part because of being so much more compact. Looking forward to taking one of the new ones apart.
BH6, BX6 2.0, BE6, BE6-II 2.0, ST6-RAID, BE6-II 2.0 (again), BD7-RAID, BD7II-RAID, IC7-G, IC7 Max3, AB9 QuadGT, IX38 QuadGT. IX58... Oh, b*ll*cks. RIP Abit
I wonder if it supports "Windows Goodbye" where it detects how infuriated you are with another broken update and just self immolates, leaving you with a fresh Ubuntu install?
Not sure why we need 4K webcams? If I'm streaming my camera image is tiny, if I'm on a Zoom or Teams call, it's just not needed... Better clarity, HDR, USB 3.x and maybe even a higher frame rate, but not 4K...
About the only use I can think of is making YouTube type content on a budget. And yes, I know serious Youtubers use "proper" cameras, often DSLR / Mirrorless doubling up for YT, right up to £15-20k a pop cinema-type whoppers, but anyone starting out may want to do it on a budget. Then again, for them, a phone camera would probably suffice.
I do wonder if this is a solutuin looking for a problem, if it's a case of the capability being available, and more/bigger/faster just has to be better, right? Well, no, not necessarily.

The article shows the 2010 camera, not the new one they are likely to be launching. We don't have the specs for that one yet, but you'd assume at least 1080p/60 and 4k/30 will be available.
it doesn't fee like 10 years since the last lifecam was launched - but I guess it will be by now! Time really flys.
Perhaps. A lot of factors (IMHO) go into choosing a camera if high quality results are the end objective, but that would also include things like selecting a suitable lens focal length, and if you want a blurred background, maximum aperture. What level of post processing will be done? Is the footage going to be colour graded? Shoot in (for Americans) 30fps or "cinematic" 24fps? And a host more.
Which is exactly why someone with more serious intentions and a suitable budget wouldn't be looking to use a webcam anyway.
It's a bit like capturing sound .... do you use a £10 cheapie mic, or a £3000 pro one? It depends what you want, what you're capturing, how serious you are about it and, of course, what you can afford.

Not just youtube and social media... lots of students and instructors at home needing to record presentations or lectures. Looking good for conferences and other places where you are representing someone. People can tell, it makes it look more professional. Not everyone is always happy with tiny thumbnail image videos.
HDR would be fantastic! Every webcam I've tried struggles with the non-ideal lighting environment around me. I either get blown out windows, or an underexposed face, or swinging between those extremes depending on where my head is. Sure, I could rearrange my room or get some studio lighting, but all I want is to look better for my Skype/Zoom/Webex calls.
