The likes of an 8GB RX570 for £140 (which I got quite happily used to for a while) seems like an impossible dream at this point. My boss was considering getting an Nvidia card to replace his RX570 so he can do some stuff that is only on CUDA for example, and I wonder how many others there are out there in that position on top of the obvious gamers wanna and people getting ready for a new term (though from what I've seen new school/university year purchases are mostly laptops).

I think its still a lot of miners doing it - just not as many as before. Hence why prices seem a bit better now. For example you can get GTX1050TI and GTX1650 GDDR6 GPUs at £150~£200 now, which are not ideal but better than before.

For example on Ebay the non-LHR GPUs are going for more than the LHR ones(all FE models are non-LHR). The thing is since the internet has "democratised" mining as a quick get rich scheme,I suspect lots of more clueless people are still buying into it now and I can tell by checking some of the Ebay accounts of people buying these cards at silly prices.....they are buying lots of overpriced GPUs.

Yes,there are always gamers who pay above RRP,but then they were the same lot during every mining boom, who "had" to justify paying massively over RRP. You even had gamers justifying the higher than RRP prices because they could mine it back.Yet everyone I know who has some self control, who did get a GPU since last year paid RRP,or close to RRP,or just stuck with their old GPU.

The RRPs themself were just about sufficient, especially in light of the crap Ampere pricing(which was only partially fixed with the Super updates).

Funny how it never goes the other way. After all these tech companies act like charities when it comes to paying taxes - Nvidia in 2018 did not pay any US Federal taxes despite a record financial year:

Always impossible to really know, but the overall hashrate chart says we will be back to peak mining rates really soon:

    https://etherscan.io/chart/hashrate

There have been a bunch of people who stopped mining, and sold their entire mining farms (or the GPUs used in them) as a job lot so there could well be people who wanted to get into mining have so far been mostly buying up from people leaving. But at this point, we are so close to the old peak hash rate I don't think that can be true.

It really makes no sense to be buying GPUs just for mining right now. I can't see how you would get the money back. But I'm sure you are right that some will be trying anyway.

If that's the case why are people buying the 3080?
The 3080Ti is a LRH card, the 3080 isn't. You can also see that with the 3060Ti - the LHR versions are approx 40% cheaper then the unrestricted cards (according to hardware unboxed).
