Asus Intel 200-series mainboards get Windows 11 updates

Microsoft said it wouldn't be supporting pre-8th gen Intel CPUs, but this move gives some hope.

Re: Asus Intel 200-series mainboards get Windows 11 updates

My main system is still quite happily running an 8700K on a Maximus VIII Hero, and will continue to be until Alder Lake at least, more likely RPL. It has a TPM installed, so it'll be interesting to see what happens when I eventually get round to trying a Win11 preview build.

Indeed given that the ability to seamlessly run 8th gen CPU on a Z170 chipset board demonstrates there's next to no real difference between the Z170-270-370, there's no obvious reason - beyond deliberate blocking - why it shouldn't work.

All non-supported cpus/boards should be able to install Windows 11 via an .iso. Ish. This is according to Microsoft.

You need to keep up! There's been articles stating that you'll have an iso for cpus/boards that are not directly supported.

Will be interesting if I get it going on my E5 2680 v3, its a secondary photo/video editing pc so not essential but would be nice to keep all pcs on same OS.

Yes, lets pull an Apple move and unsupport older hardware, even if its perfectly capable!!!! Screw the consumer, lets make them spend money they don't need to spend and make the whole planet suffer with more resources extracted! I predict that Windows 10 will be used for at least 10 years... We will make it a zombie OS just like Windows XP was until recently!

MS have already given the date (Autumn 2025 if I remember correctly) when W10 goes unsupported, so unless they extend that period, the risk of using it goes up at that point. No doubt some users (including possibly me) will carry on after that, though in my case, such machines will not be connected to the internet after that.

How did you get a 8700k working on a Z170 board?
