    To the best of my knowledge the exact launch date has not yet been given for any Blu-ray drives or burners - it's just that, when the button gets pushed, everyone and their dog will be selling them, judging from the conversations I've had with makers, and by the prototypes that have been shown in the last few months.

    The idea - as I understand it - is that prices of drives that can read Blu-ray media and the burners that can write to them will be in the same ball-park as those of current-generation Double Layer drives and burners, though I guess there is going to be some sort of premium. But, what that will be isn't clear, yet.

    I'm writing a piece about this right now, and will put in a link here when I've done - hopefully later this morning or early in the afternoon.

    If you need it the product code for the discs at Maplin are:
    * A55CX HD DVD media
    * A56CX Blu-ray media
    Quote: "Both formats will be available through Maplin winter 2005!" from the Autumn/Winter catalogue page 276. (Available on the maplin website @ http://www.maplin.co.uk)

    Sorry the earlier post said
    "(Available on the maplin website @ http://www.maplin.co.uk)"

    This should have said that the complete catalogue is available as an ebook on the website if anyone wanted to read what was published about the discs. (Through a link at the top of the homepage of the website.)

    High Density have a capacity of 23GB as shown in the picture (in the catalogue) but the size of Blue Ray discs is not mentioned. However if I remember right, when the technology was unveiled originally 1/2 a year ago, Metro (newspaper) mentioned it was 10 times the current capacity so perhaps 47GB or 85GB?

    this is a good kinda snappshot of info regarding Blu-Ray and HD-DVD. they update it every so often too.

    Theoretical limit to Blu-Ray is 200gig, thats 8 layers of 25gig each. TDK as already announced that 100gig *recordable* disks are on the cards.

    HD-DVD tops out at 60gig (4x 15gig)

    Please explain what on the cards mean?
    And I wonder what the access speeds will be like for replacement of Hard Drives...... (minus the annoying whirring spin up noise.)

    EDIT: I have just noticed that you CAN buy this from ebay. Here's the link:
    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Sony-Blu-Ray-H...QQcmdZViewItem

    It sounds cheap: £56 + £2.20 delivery for the TV based player and ONE blu ray disc.
    And it started at a price of 0.99p (one day listing instead of a week say) and NO reserve price!

    Definietly too good to be true...

    what i meant is that TDK has sent out a press release saying that they have been able to make them, the technology is there, just don't expect them tomorrow, but they will appear in the forseeable future
