Too late for me...our new Exchange box is coming from HP and has a couple of nice little dual core Optys in it; and that's from someone who has bought Dell with all the prior servers for the company. My workstation's a dual Opty, too.
Intel will be pleased!
Nice finally Dell is realising that AMD is the better choice
Well better choice for who ?? The average joe might not know what the difference is anyway lol
The average Joe isn't choosing between Poweredges and Proliants, or Precisions and HP Workstations...
Who said they wasnt making A64 desktops?

WWW.MrsBurley.CO.UK now updated
I think this story isn't true - its just noise - I could claim Dell spoke to me to source components for them.
If they do it - I suspect it will be white box to beginw ith
its about time!
Surly they should of done this ages ago, it can only be a good move for Dell!
but if its not true then, that sucks somewhat.
i like dell pc's but i'd still rather make my own.
I tend to believe it this time; I could be wrong, but I'd guess that there're a lot of firms who know that bang per buck they can do a lot better with an Opteron-based server than they can with a Xeon, and Dell don't do 'em. Hence me buying HP, and lost sales in the corporate space'll hurt Dell.
I would imagine the decision is purely economical, and not performance.
There is more money to be made selling the cheaper AMD chips, and joe public will hardly notice the difference.
With the sweetheart deals that Dell gets from Intel, they can shift PCs to Joe Average at a price that any box shifter would find hard to beat using any AMD processors. AMD processors just aren't that cheap, especially when you factor in the discounts that Dell probably gets from being an Intel only shop. If the story is true and the Big D is going to ship AMD-base
boxes, it isn't because AMD are undercutting Intel on price; it's because Dell are losing sales on grounds of performance. A key point to note is that Dell are, according to the report, sourcing servers. Opterons aren't cheaper than Xeons; they're winning sales on performance. I don't think that Dell can stomach losing sales through being the only major server vendor that doesn't ship an AMD-based machine. Toss in the fact that they've been aggressively targetting gamers with high-performance, high-price-tag lines like the Dimension and Inspiron XPS series and the good press that X2s and dual-core Opterons have been getting in the workstation space, and the Athlon-shaped hole in their product lines has been looking increasingly glaring.
Intel shall be slightly unhappy about it lol
