U.S. networks under attack from China

Government and industry networks in the U.S. are under a systematic attack by hackers, and it's believed that the attacks are coming from China, moreover, the Chinese military.
The attacks had been traced to the Chinese province of Guangdong, and the techniques used made it appear unlikely it came from any other source than the military, said Alan Paller, the director of the SANS Institute, an education and research organisation focusing on cybersecurity.

"These attacks come from someone with intense discipline. No other organisation could do this if they were not a military organization," Paller said in a conference call on Monday to announced a new cybersecurity education program.

If it has now genuinely become a political issue then surely this is -big- news?

    *if* it could be proved.

So far the only reason they think it's military was because it was done well, and organised

I could be wrong, but I'm sure the military aren't the only group capable of being organised. Chinese mafia/triad anyone?

    This isnt the first time.

I was reading an article a while back about this guy who worked undercover for the FBI and tracked down these hackers to the same place Guandong.

    They were stealing NASA secrets.

I mean why not? Why would they pay money to spend 10 years researching something when they can hack it and have it built in 2?

Not saying it is right, but it is the smart thing to do.

Are you thinking of Gary McKinnon? Interesting comment on his recently modified bail conditions here.

Guandong is one of the most populated and prosperous part of China, and proabaly the most geeky part, not surprising they trace it back to there

There was a good story in the Guardian explaining how it is thought that China has been sending over loads of spies to western countries, to try to copy their business techniques, learn etc.

However it kind of concluded that the information that was often returned was frivolous.

    So watch it ... lol

Not quite on the same scale as hoards of chinese hackers tho!
