for those who cant read it cos the silly sapphire ad blocks the right hand 1/3 of the textI’ve really had to sit here and think for a long time about what my first comment about the PS3 would be. Will I say, its GREAT or will I give it two thumbs down. Well my immediate impression of the PS3 is…where is it? Seriously, where is it? They have a case, a controller and a dev kit. But the system still doesn’t even exist. So what is there to say? We received one of 5 PS3 dev kits in the United States some time ago. Several companies in the US as well as companies over seas were given the daunting task of creating a demo in less than 9 weeks on a first generation dev kit. Now I’ll be honest with you. What most companies do is fake the entire demo. I mean they come up with some great visuals and neat tricks and scripted events. In the end however, its not a real time demo and its not running ON the actual box. We were the only company to my knowledge that showed something that ran it live on the box. Even then it was a scripted event. You could not pause the camera and fly around the scene. So if you saw the demo once, you saw it again the exact same way the second time. Also this was on a brutally early dev box. You could always tell where the PS3 dev box was because it’s the room that had the f-bomb coming out of it half the day.

Thats really interesting imo
Aside from the bloke sounding like a bit of an idiot - his comments on the hardware side (lack of final box etc) are very interesting. This certainly doesn't look as bad as the headlines were, but still doesn't bode too well for the PS3 in markets other than Japan
Looks like PS3 devs are having a hard time. And reports frm XBox 360 devs are good I've heard
Yeah was about to say... would read it if there wasn't a ridiculous f**king horizontal banner ad next to it making the right bar cover up the text.
good i'm not the only one having trouble reading it I never thought i'd say this, but i actually want microsoft to do well, i've never been less interested in a console than the ps3 i'm just glad this article gives a bit of substance to opinion that the x360 will be better than the ps3. That said, i'd rather have a pc any day
To be fair to the guy, he's not saying that the PS3 is going to be crap, just that it's not going to be immediately more impressive than the 360, until the developers really start to be able to get used to the system.
Even still, it's a pretty stupid thing to say about your employer in public.
I used to get that ad banner. What resolution is your screen? I had to change mine to 1080.Originally Posted by Michael
Also Mike, the initial reports took a section of his comments to make it look worse. As you said, I think once you read it through it doesn't seem that bad.

mine is 1024x768, the ad is the wrong shape, screws up the whole screen.

Also there is an unclose italics tag somewhere as its screwing up the whole page for me
On topic: Its a very interesting read, nice to see someone in the games industry being honest about these things. I think sony have a major battle on their hands this time around with the xbox 360 and it has a very good early advantage. Every extra day of waiting for the ps3 means its that little bit harder for sony.

Its nice to see Sony getting a good slagging off. They have consistantly produced sub standard products (except for their laptop range) and sold them at inflated prices relying on the Sony brand name to bring in the business. Its interesting that last year Samsung became the number One electronics company in Japan as Sony's market share has decreased heavily in certain areas due to increased public knowledge of their product quality and rebadging (i.e the vast majority of their hifi, video, dvd and TV equipment is rebadged Sanyo or Aiwa (I can't remember which)) and as such savvy customers have realised they can buy the same product in a different case or sometimes with just a different badge for a lot less money.
My personal experience of them is that the company I work for sell their products and that they have the most arrogant and unhelpful customer service of any company I have ever had to deal with. I can say with pride that I have not sold a Sony product (including PS/2) for over 2 years and never will until they actually offer help to their customers and actually offer either high quality products for the price thay charge, or reduce the price of their products down to ones which fit the actual build quality they offer.
Their laptops are well built, just stupidly priced.
Hmm, can there be such a thing as an anti-fanboy??
TBH, Sony aren't doing anything that a lot of other companies do, that's not to condone it, but it's hardly fair to single Sony out as the only company that does so.
It's the same in the motor industry, there are very few innovators left purely because the market is so cut-throat, so you're left with the same product re-skinned and re-packaged multiple times.
The laptop market is an extremely well-known example of a sector where virtually none of the "Names" actually produce anything other than the ODM design brief, and get foxcon, asus, etc etc to build them.
Also, not all of the re-badges are as simple as that either, many "Name" brands will take an oem product from one of the manufacturers and modify them with better components etc.
It may be a simple argument that "Manufacturer X" doesn't actually make any of it's own products, but the truth is that it's much more complex than that, and anything but simple..
