CTS - 2006 :: Cherry looking to get back some cream

Cherry was once the number-one name in consumer keyboards but now takes a backseat to Microsoft and Logitech. HEXUS caught up with the company at the Computer Trade Show to see what products it's been introducing to try to grab back some market share.

CyMotion PRO Wireless - a wireless mouse is included, too

    More in this HEXUS.headline.

Unless they're selling zillions of basic keyboards to OEMs and making megabucks as a result, Cherry really need to innovate and individualise their keyboards, particularly the design, styling and features. Otherwise they're going to be left behind MS and Logitech.

I think they've already been left behind to an extent - so what you're saying really is, perhaps, what they need to do to start catching up again.

Well, we got a Cymotion Master Xpress as a replacement for a user here, and it's a lovely keyboard. OK, it's a squidge under £20, but well worth it. Personally, I'd like to see them gain a greater market share; they've always made good capable keyboards.

I'd appreciate a good no-nonsense keyboard with a sturdy build quality and good quality yet quiet keys, like an IBM laptop, but with full-size keys. I'm currently using a Microsoft Comfort Curve, and love the low key action, but the whole keyboard is flimsy plastic, has those useless extra function keys hanging off the top taking up room, and space bar clatters noisily. I would have bought an IBM but couldn't find one with a USB interface at the time.

It seems you either get a budget crap keyboard, or pay more for a half-decent keyboard but get lumbered with the usual media keys rubbish along with it too. It's one of the most important yet overlooked parts of the PC - I'd happily see Cherry make a good quality USB keyboard with no gimmiks and quiet low-action keys.

I've got a cherry cymotion solar, solar powered keyboard, and wireless mouse with ps2 recharger dongle so you can keep using it whilst recharging.

Yea ok it all sounds very good

The mouse is very low resolution and not at all good for online shooters. The programmble keys will annoy new users. Who uses CTRL-C to copy? Unfortunately there is a key to the left of the ctrl key which is programmed to cut, very infuriating until you get to grips with the layout.
To err is human. To really foul things up ... you need a computer.
