PS3 hardware broken?

Now, obviously the PS3 will work, but will it work as it's supposed to? The Inquirer has some horrific figures showing just how crippled parts of the system are. More worrying is the lack of info on whether these issues will be fixed.

Cell local memory read bandwidth is a stunning 16MBps, note that is a capital M to connote Mega vs a capital G to connote Giga. This is a three order of magnitude oopsie, and it is an oopsie, as Sony put it "(no, this isn't a typo...)".

If you can write at 250x the read speed, it makes Cell local memory just about useless. That means you do all your work out of main memory, and the whole point of local is, well, pointless.

Of course, numbers are numbers. If it stays crippled, let's see how programmers make do with it.

it suggests you use the cell memory as a way of shifting stuff OUT of the processor, but read it IN from the main mem. seems like a reasonable way of doing things for me - and lets face it, it must have been designed that way delibrately. my 10 year old pc has a faster nic than that

The PS3 is looking like it is going to flop more and more by the day. The price is too high and the performance isnt there from what developers have been saying. The xbox though is nothing special either imho and i dont want to pay for online gaming with xbox live.

The only one looking like worth having is the wii. Im deffo going to get one of those and Im no fanboy either. I just hope it doesnt become a short lived gimmick with no support.

same here, the only thing im getting swung towards is the wii, mainly becuz i cant wait to swing my arms round like a moron and the 360's graphics / gameplay dont exactly make me go ohhhh wooowww like the ps2 did back in the day (GT3 )

ok i am a nintendo fan but i own a gamecube ps2 and obox n the cube is the console i play with the least

I was disappointed to say the least when I came across this, yet another thing to make the PS3 look like a bad choice (as if the price wasn't enough).
I'm starting to think that sacrificing my dignity and flapping around on the Wii might just happen... :O

at the end of the day, i feel that the only company intent on taking gaming to the next level has been nintendo. they did it with the N64 with the graphics, i think the gameplay on the gamecube was second to none, i mean what other console do u know that four people can play a monkey trapped in a sphere seeing how far u can pelt urself out to sea?
the xbox360 and the ps3 are exactly the same as the xbox and the ps2. Its just new hardware in an old package. nintendo are once again, pushing the boundaries of lounge-gaming, turning the couch-potato into an athletic cyber-tennis player

The jist of it is that it is perfectly normal to have a heavily asyncronous memory system when talking in terms of the GPU.

The CPU really doesn't need to access the RSX local memory much - if ever, but the RSX does need fast read/write speeds to main memory, which it has in spades..

Oh well, at least that's the inq's bandwidth bills paid for this month..
