Good thing that Conroe is with us then I guess
Time will tell what becomes of this deal, but it doesnt sound good from a consumers perspective.

It cud be very interesting .. imagine if some of the technologeis pass over... dual core ati gpus for exampel?
It's going to cost a hell of a lot and take a heck of a long time to all go through - I don't think we will ever see them "merge" in to one entity.
Lots of interesting things though - such as the fact AMD are very keen to get in to the integrated market - selling a complete solution, this is opened up by ATI chipset buisness.
Also - with Conroe looking strong, and Crossfire appearing to being its "key" graphics on 975 - AMD mebbe want a bit of the love (this is a banterful thing - not a reason to splash out billions).
It also makes NVIDIA a much smaller fish in big water if this happens.
VIA I believe are going to suffer from this - but their move in to other markets no doubt means they won't feel the affect they may have done a couple of years back
Who knows may be ATI-AMD going to buy VIA nextOriginally Posted by David

.. thing is, what products do VIA have which AMD/ATI may want?
Those VIA ITX processors are pretty cool
But I do think your right - VIA don't have a whole lot to offer
Yes, Nano and Mini-ITX is good - but look at how small the market is - there is one but it's not huge.
Hmm, I'm not too keen on this going ahead. As already pointed out, it'll limit choice.

I'm currently doing a detailed analysis of this
Yeah agreed. would be a shame to make the market that little bit more smaller though wouldn't it?Originally Posted by David
If this had gone ahead a year ago, I think Nvidia, and to a lesser extent, Intel, could have been real in trouble. AMD and ATi have generally been the favourites of enthusiasts, yet with Conroe's release, Intel seems to have made real comeback in this segment of the market, which has seemingly been the only one it hasn't dominated.
However, I think people will now begrudge ATi's graphics cards being tweaked deliberately in favour of AMD chipsets; Conroe has been too much of a success, and it's not even properly released yet. This could backfire, and even boost Nvidia's sales.

Well, with Intel being an arse at making chipsets, I don't know. Intel mobos with 965 don't even come with any dual graphics solution, how lame is that?Originally Posted by MiLaMber

Thing is Queelis, Intel chipsets/processors supply most of the low-range desktops your average PC World customer would look at. Therefore they have to cater to both ends of the scale, something i975x does quite nicely. However, the openess of the chipset to redesign allows fab-lab companies to alter as they wish. In effect, everyone's happy.

I see theinq's Charlie has spouted forth on the subject, mentioning mini-cores, gpu functionality, and that if they didn't do the deal, AMD would be out of business in 5 years..
/me sits down and summons forth Rys to shed some light on the subject
