Tesco to start selling low-cost, own-brand software

UK supermarket giant Tesco is to start selling low-cost, own-brand software this month - on the web and in 100 stores.

The six-strong initial line-up will take in two security/antivirus apps; a personal finance tool; a "complete" office suite; a CD/DVD burning program; and a photo-editing package. If things go according to plan, the range will be extended over the coming 12 months and stocked in far more stores.

And you say that based on, what information?

(Not knocking, just wondering if you know something that I don't).

Oh, and I reckon this site might contain clues about what some of the software might actually be.

Tesco approached us as a local PC retailer that does PC repairs and what not to support their PCs. Essentially, whenever Tesco gets a call RE: their PCs not working, they get sent to us and we can charge what we liked. There were some horrible clauses in the small print; so we turned that down, at the time (3-4 months ago) we were overloaded with work as it was. From what I've heard, Tesco are really pushing the computer market at the moment.

Some pretty generic programs really. Seems security software is coming out of the woodwork left right and centre, Photo editing software seems to appear from everywhere too, same with the burning software.

Cant imagine it being amazing software, for me, Tesco = cheap version of rebranded software.

BTW, the news link is broken, links to the Toshiba HD DVD burner

Well I've read that article you pointed out and I'm just literally wondering if this will actually bring anything new to the market or if it's just rebranded and slightly cheaper software like Panda or something. Google software is free....and not too bad...
