    Low cost 3d-CAD grahpics card

We have a CAD/mech engineer in at work temporarily while they get a visa to work in the US. I've got Pro-E (a 3d-cad program) on a decent PC (3GHz P4, 1G RAM, etc), but it's got onboard gfx. It really gets loaded down with the CAD stuff.

I was wondering if there are cheaper cards out there that will take some workload other than the high-end Nvidia/Matrox cards?

    OK, I found this:

The FX-540 with 128Mb of RAM. I was wondering how these would perform, if it would even make much of a difference?

If you can get hold of an ATI (or partner) 9500/9700/9800/X800 card, these can be modded to be the equivalent FireGL card.

you could try www.retekdirect.co.uk as a known supplier of cheapish second-hand ATI cards.

That's awesome! Love the mod, I'm going to give it a go.

I think the PC is AGP, but TBH I haven't opened it up yet.

It's probably AGP if you aren't sure I take it it's not one from your sig?

No, I have definitely opened them up before Too many times...

It's a work PC in the office, I'm not in IT so I have never opened up that PC or even really looked at it - I just know it's a P4 with 1G of Ram.

IT at my work are not very willing to try soft-modding, etc, and generally don't know squat about PC hardware, just about networking (which is fair enough).
