Nice review goes to show that the 4870 1gb and gtx260 216core are pritty much neck and neck
The main difference seems to be nvidia's far better stock cooler
This is very interesting. It wasn't that long ago where people generally agreed that AMD was the better buy. I am surprised that the table changed (just about) with one refresh.
I don't think it's just the cooler though. If there was one thing that the 48xx series did worse than the 2xx series, it was the idle power consumption.
Is there a 48xx refresh on the horizon (I've been totally out of the loop in the past few months)?
'Better buy' takes cost into account the cost. I just double checked the figures on Anandtech to make sure that I did not imagine it, and as I remembered, the 4870 was quite consistently faster than the GTX260 up to and including 1900x1200 (hardly a 'low' resolution) and all while being cheaper.
At 2560x1600 they trade wins, but it's hardly decisive for the, at the time, noticeably more expensive GTX260. I don't think anyone disputed that the GTX280 was overall faster but it was also priced toward a completely different segment (the fact that the 4870 still managed to steal a win here and there was a plus). Unless that review is quite different from every other ones, or nVidia managed to boost the 2xx series's performance considerably via driver updates, I'd say that the praise for the 48xx series was well deserved.
