I think it'll be very close, with different games favouring either side. nVidia also has to beat AMD's somewhat awesome crossfire scaling which in my opinion will be the hardest part for them.

Every time Nvidia has released a dual card-card, it has been with the sole purpose of taking the performance crown.
I'm sure you;re right with the lower speed binned dies, and 600 Mhz certainly stacks up with their current range, but I fail to see the point of releasing a card that would be less powerful than the 6990 if it's less profitable than the 580. one of these at £699 using up 2 of their best chips vs the sale of 2x580's @ £400 seems nonsense to me... and you don;t get the performance crown? Nah.
Their strategy has been performance leader at every step with these high end launches, and they've shoe-horned it to get it. My guess is if the card would need to be 650 mhz on each GPU to be level with AMD, then they will go 666 or a number tactically higher.
Otherwise.... well, what's the point? They can't be as profitable per unit as AMD (as their size > AMD's, their yields lower, therefore their costs will be higher), so they only have performance left to go for!
...or volume sales. And this is a limited release.

I think you're brave for calling nVidia fans that We get away with it because we're meaningless forum posters, but you're the editorDoes NVIDIA really care if it has the fastest consumer graphics card in the world? I don't think so, folks, because its loyal horde of sycophants
I agree with the opinion of possible speed - I mooted that in the news thread a while back and it's my opinion that AMD delayed the 6990 to hide their sudden switch in power philosophy. I don't think nVidia have time to respond with the review batch of cards, but I also wouldn't be surprised if they find some kind of software solution to raise the power caps, even though, as you mention, the power management isn't as elegant as AMDs solution.
But will nVidia care? Hell yes. The only reason this card exists is to get the fastest card title. There's no point otherwise as the costs don't make sense over a pair or more of smaller cards.
The card is either faster than the 6990 or it isn't, and it's been long enough in development. It will surely beat the 5970 at least, and currently nVidia is only 3rd fastest. They have to release it, faster than the 6990 or not.
Assumptions
1. 6970xf=570SLI
2. 570SLI/6970xf>6990 (with normal switch)
3. Xfire drivers for 69xx aren't finished (this is a worry for NV as they don't scale like the 68xxs which is suprising).
NV have the chance to choose clocks or shaders for lowest energy. They'll take either and damn the power usage or add a switch just to say oh switch that and now you have the fastest single card (as the neighbourhoods lights dim)!
Looks like this is panning out to support the Hexus article....

That photo is a 295 single PCB on vr-zone. Apologies for all the pics.

Good news though; not a wood screw in sight!
in many benches SLI gtx580 trades blows with the 6990. and then they can both be over clocked.
a GTX590 even running at full 580 speed may barely compete with the 6990.
I also find it interesting how people look at nvidia cards and say they are 'cool' when what should be said is 'they have good coolers'.
AMD really need to change the stock cooling and fans they use as they are just plain rubbish and is their biggest flaw.
Nvidia? GTX590 < hmm it really depends on what they do.. the EVGA GTX460 2win out performs a single gtx580 and lies inbetween a 580 and 6990.. Nvidia WILL lay it all out and WILL create a beast that WILL melt your mohterboard, AND WILL DIE in the summer.
AND WILL BE faster than the 6990..
AND WILL need a 1KW psu.
hmm i confused myself there :/ its early and im not thinking straight.
Yes, very confused. Stock cooler for the 6990 and the 590 are the same.
the 6990 uses a radial-blowing fan. If the leaked slides are remotely accurate the 590 uses an axial-blowing fan. A small, but potentially crucial, difference!

Let's be honest. Reference version of GTX590 is just pure PR.
nVidia must create card which can run on most systems. Which means that they will keep it in <=375W range (2x8pins + power from PCI-Express x16 slot). Seriously I'm not that much excited about box-standard GTX590. We must wait for non-reference versions of both 6990 and 590. It would be simply suicidal from nVidia to release reference card which can suck dry 600W PSU while reference 6990 stay well below 400W.
On the other hand partners of nVidia/ATi couldn't care less about PR. With new versions of (e.g.) Ares, Mars or Twin Frozr cooling just Asus and MSI can (will) create real beasts. Only such cards are relevant to find out how good they really are. Reference solutions can't move past certain line. Non-reference can. Here power usage is secondary issue. All what matters is PERFORMANCE.
Of course I will read reviews of 590 just like I did with 6990. But waiting for proper, fully clocked versions with superb cooling. Reference versions are only for watercooling. For now only need to buy bigger PSU. And in 3 months time we will see some 3rd party 6990/590.

clearly... AMDs cooling has been great for a while now. Especially GTX4 series vs the HD5 series
Its going to be a huge letdown if the gtx 590 is gonna be slower than hd6990 with the trailer and all...
That bloke making the video announcement appeared before fermi was released and that is the only time I've seen him at his desk talking about cards.
Now fermi was quite a let down. I think they only let him out as a firefighting measure or am I being unfair.
