Interesting point, TPU are about the only site I know of with the gear to measure GPU power alone, but AFAICT they didn't test power draw in their 12.11 article. It would be interesting to see how the increased power draw is divided between CPU/GPU.

Re: Reviews - AMD Catalyst 12.11 benchmarked; surprising performance gains

What is the "benchmark map" for BF3? Apparently performance varies between 10-30% depending on map.
Kalniel: "Nice review Tarinder - would it be possible to get a picture of the case when the components are installed (with the side off obviously)?"
CAT-THE-FIFTH: "The Antec 300 is a case which has an understated and clean appearance which many people like. Not everyone is into e-peen looking computers which look like a cross between the imagination of a hyperactive 10 year old and a Frog."
TKPeters: "Off to AVForum better Deal - £20+Vat for Free Shipping @ Scan"
for all intents it seems to be the same card minus some gays name on it and a shielded cover ? with OEM added to it - GoNz0.

Swordbreaker I think. Apparently people play through the scene and then compare FRAPS data. If there is a bench like the AvP one I haven't seen it.

It would be interesting if both card manufactures sold their top range cards without their stock coolers. At least then if you planned to replace the default cooler, you don't end up with the extra cooler in your hands.

Re: Reviews - AMD Catalyst 12.11 benchmarked; surprising performance gains

Getting and AMD Graphic is the best choice you have ever made, reliable, stable and long life. I am not fan of AMD nor nVidia, but I had very-very bad experience with Geforce Cards that tend to die after some time, and never had this issue with AMD, thats why i want to buy something that lasts not something that dies in a time that can still handle 99 % of game tittles

Re: Reviews - AMD Catalyst 12.11 benchmarked; surprising performance gains

I'll always buy Nvidia. There drivers are less buggy and more innovative with Physx & CUDA etc. Anyway, these benchmarks makes no difference to me as the top GFX cards are ridiculously expensive and I refuse to pay more than £200 for a graphics card, especially considering that the budget next gen cards normally come out 6 months or so later with better performance at half the price.

Re: Reviews - AMD Catalyst 12.11 benchmarked; surprising performance gains

FYI the driver improves performance for the entire range, not just the top end cards. PhysX can be a nice feature, but as it's only used by about two decent games it's hardly a deal-breaker IMO; it would be better if dev's used open physics engines rather than using a proprietary engine which is purposefully hobbled on other platforms.

You get people complaining about reliability and/or drivers from both sides; both have their problems, just some people have one card/driver go bad on them and condemn the entire brand. I'm not saying that's always the case, but overall, reliability should be about the same.

You do know that nvidia didn't invent or create PhysX, don't you? They bought the tech when they bought a company called Aegia, who used to sell discrete acceleration cards that would work with any PC hardware (yes, originally both nvidia and ati users were able to enjoy the benefits of PhysX). They then canned the discrete PhysX cards, and locked the software to systems that only contained nvidia graphics cards. That's hardly innovative...

Well we can see that Nvidia prices have come down, you can now get a GTX660 for only £160.
Is this a response to AMD?

Getting some artifacting in BF3. I've had this before with Beta drivers though, and expect that it will be cleared by the time it gets to WHQL.

I'd expect so, cheaper AMD cards outperforming them at most games, now including BF3, basically forces it.

Wll done AMD, u just pulled out a rabit out of your hat. I wish I had enough money to buy one . Yesturday bought an Radeon 4830 used/defect for 7 Eur. and it turned out that it was all fine just the fan was dead, changed the fan and got mid rage graphic for dirt cheap, say it free.

Bargain! Still a very capable card if you're reasonable with settings.

Re: Reviews - AMD Catalyst 12.11 benchmarked; surprising performance gains

Looks like AMD are apparently planning to roll out another Tahiti-based GPU to fit between 7870 and 7950: http://www.xbitlabs.com/news/graphic...ip_Report.html

Article says it will be 7800 series, but based on past cards, wouldn't 7930 or something make more sense? Or I wonder of it's a marketing thing, 7890 probably sounds newer+more exciting than 7930 which implies cheapened 7900 series, I suppose?

7930 would be consistent and therefore obviously the wrong thing to do with GPU names *sigh*
