The cost comes from the difficulty in masking features down at 20nm forcing the use of multi patterning (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multiple_patterning). FinFET doesn't control costs, it controls power used and improves performance but at the cost of making the device more complex and so using even more masks to make it.

So basically FinFET is a way of making 10nm possible, not cheap.

    GTX1080 UK price. £630 to £650. Thats about £120-£170 more than a GTX980Ti.

35% more money for 20% more performance of an already ridiculously overpriced card.

It's about £100 more, though now shops are discounting 980ti stock of course. But what's the price of the non-reference 1080? Ars say the FE is £620 and the non-reference around £450.

I've definitely seen GTX980Ti's for about £150-170 less.

I think they got their numbers muddied. If you look at the Nvidia price for the non-reference models it equates to around £500 for the cheapest card.

Non-reference GTX980TI cards have been available for around £500 since last year.

Plus this review overclocked both the GTX980TI and GTX1080:

    http://www.overclockersclub.com/revi...clocking/2.htm

If you average the numbers it is around 22% or thereabouts.

So it's about the same price, but 22% faster (assuming the non-reference models also OC at least as well) and uses significantly less power.

Only if 500 and 650 have become the same number.

Where does 650 come from? Cat reckons Ars got the price wrong and it should be 500 for the non-reference 1080, which compares to a non-reference 980ti price of 500 also.

Well, Overclockers have set a pre-order price and it's £630-£650 depending on which brand people want on their cardboard box.
Can't see any actual decent custom designs coming in at less than that for at least a few weeks if not months.
Since the 'F-Editions' seem to have no redeeming features aside from the vapour chamber (that is the VRM, power phases, etc. are all rather poor as with a lot of lower end Nvidia reference design), why should AIBs sell a more expensive to produce card for less?

Yes, I presume that's the FE (aka early adopter tax edition), I'm talking about the non-FE cards which Ars say should be £450, cat reckons nearer £500, but either way it's about the same price as a (similarly non-reference) 980ti currently.

Well of course, Overclockers may be price gauging but if the alleged difference between FE and non-FE is meant to be $100 and £630 = $699, the same $<>£ ration would be about £540. But it is possible that price AIBs will sell build-down to a price bare design: poor PCB, poor power delivery, and cheap fans.

Think I'll stick with my 980Ti for a while, then. I imagine nVidia are going to have to do something good when Polaris flops out. Christmas might be interesting.

So, first cards are arriving...Asus GTX 1080 FE

But the price is whooping 899CHF (Swiss Francs) here in Switzerland, so almost the same amount in USD.

very expensive, we can see nVidia doesn't have competition.

I will wait September I think.
