Re: AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3960X and 3970X

Is that really a smallish SATA SSD being used? That could well be the scaling issue in Handbrake. I don't expect Handbrake to scale well, but that result doesn't look quite right.

Still, nice review, wish I could afford such a beast.

Doubt it would make much difference - handbrake isn't always a great choice

Man... and the 3990X isn't even out yet... Beginning to think that Intel's blue is more and more appropriate, given all the bruises they are getting...

Fair enough. I did some more reading around, the first hit I got before doing that post above showed the 32 core part clearly going faster than the 24 core part. Having now seen results on other sites, clearly it isn't that simple and handbrake isn't using all the cores.

Intel boss mind just went blank reading the Threadripper review's, with empty eyes and a 1000 mile stare he walked out to the garage, started his car and was looking to suck the tailpipe to end his miserable failure as Intel boss but he couldn't even do that right since Tesla's have no tailpipe.

Re: AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3960X and 3970X

Improvements in manufacturing processes at TSMC and greater know-how from AMD culminated in the Ryzen Threadripper 2990WX in August 2018
Incorrect. All the Zen+ processors, including the second generation Threadripper, were manufactured by GlobalFoundries on their 12nm FinFET process that was developed by GloFo and Samsung. Zen 2 (Ryzen 3000 other than APUs and third generation Threadripper) is the first to be partly made by TSMC; they combine 7nm CPU chiplets from TSMC with I/O chiplets from GloFo.

Re: AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3960X and 3970X

Good to see. I've been stuck to Intel for a long time but this changes my ideas about my next machine. Even if Intel comes out with something radically better than its current range next time, it may only just match what AMD's done here. You only expect to see incremental improvements these days, so these scores are a leap.

And as for the gaming scores, which aren't my primary concern, I wonder if priorities around the next console gen are going to improve the situation for AMD on PC?

AMD is really clobbering Intel now.
