Breaking news from the front page of HEXUS.net

HEXUS have exclusively learnt that Dixon Stores Group’s online store the 'PC World Component centre’ is set to close imminently.

PCWCC was apparently run by Tony Clare, the son of DSG’s Chief Executive, John Clare CBE, but who is to blame for the apparent failure of the venture and any losses to its shareholders?

I've started this thread for discussion of the topic. This is not an opportunity to defame or libel PC World, please keep your comments within these bounds.

Well, from the shops, pc world is either very expensive or very cheap. The prices online didnt match anything like the pcworld stores I have been in maybe this is why the are closing?

The component centre seemed to be a pretty decent store - prices were reasonable, good range stocked etc.

What he said, tought they were quiet good. Just wished they sold the OEM stuff in store for the same price, and carried the range.

Can imagine that April 05 meeting can't you? New Financial year, and you have to close your sons online empire

My first thought also.

Although if I still have to navigate that godawful interface they use (may well be partially to blame imo) I might not bother.

Any other ideas as to why this went under? My thoughts are going towards a lack of marketing budget - can anyone ever remember seing any adverts online for especially good deal pcwcc stuff? Only time I bumped into them outside of bargain hunt was at one of the tech shows in London last September...

Quite often what you wanted to buy was OOS though ...
(not to mention that the prices when they were OOS were better than when the stock came in .... I seem to remember a thread about this phenomenon).

Bit of a shame really, the more competition the better & what I did buy from them I was happy with price/service etc.

There are certain thing you could only get there as well

Shame, they were good. Can't see how they could've failed as a standalone venture, so I think it just didn't fit in with the way Dixons Group operates - internal pricing policies and all that.

hmm i'm not sure where you all getting that PC world prices were resonable. They were rediculously over prices. £15 for a USB cable. Their memory was stupidly overpriced whenever they didn't have sales on.

just wondering what happens about the warranties for stuff bought from the PC World Component Centre , will they be transferred to the parent company PC World / Dixons ?

Theoretically, they should have had the buying power to price all other retailers out of the market. However, I guess that if the main part of your business is selling hardware from a plush 'out-of-town' type store at a 30-3000% margin, having an online branch with prices that are actually competitive might be counterproductive.....

I thought they were doing quite well, although I found their range wasn't that great.

It's a shame but at least we might be able to get some bargains when the sell off all their stock cheap
