    Smile HEXUS.snapshots :: FSP Group Booster X3

    Priced at £55 without VAT (~£65 with), their Booster X3 is the first in a new class of PSU designed to fit into a spare 5.25" drive bay and provide power only to your graphics subsystem. Using a 'best tool for the job' approach, the Booster X3 is able to provide 300W (320W peak, under load) output power to your graphics hardware, for up to two cards.

    Small mistake:

    +12V on Akasa
    No Booster X3 +12.00 +12.03

    +12V on Akasa
    No Booster X3 +12.08 (+0.08V improvement) +12.08 (+0.05V improvement)

    Just a quick question - did you get to measure the output from the actual unit at all?

    I was also wondering how you managed to calculate 90% efficiency. It seems a tad on the high side imo.

    Yeah, we did test on the output side of the X3, but my gear isn't perfect for this, so take the readings just as they come: Even at somewhat peak load, it rarely supplied less than 12.00V exactly, on either +12V output. Output efficiency was as stated in the piece (88.8% from my notes), and was measured at around 85% peak load.

    Heh, and I was wondering why your sample got < 85% at somewhat peak, too. Referred to that for my piece.

    I agree the outputs are excellent on the unit - just wondered how you did it as I wasn't sure

    Still unsure about the price of it though - I think it's a tad dear

    Efficiency is certainly something that can be on the difficult side to measure. We placed a 240w load on the unit and watched the power draw from the mains which sat at 286w which gave us a 83% efficiency rating.

    Just my Fluke, connected to the cabling you connect between X3 and VGA.

    Same here, although I'd argue much less accurately than you're able to do, in terms of the load condition. So if anything, it's either closer to your measured output in reality, all X3s being equal, or something sample specific.

    given the price think ill be back to the old school way and stick two psu's in. ive still got the space for a second psu in my pc70 for the old days for running 10 x 15krpm scsi drives

    I have the same toughts...
    Still, with a few more connectors and oriented on another side... couldnt this PSU be used to build PC's that are in Mid Range of PicoPSU and Normal PSU's?, i know it may be a little expensive, but it would give its look

    A good article, makes sense but i stand as idid on the inital post about it, i'd rather buy a better psu then an add on, another plug from the mains and sheer cost doesnt make sense to me

    A variety of connections would be better, as wood keeping it completely internal. For the job it's intended to do it does it well. Whether many people will need/want one is a different story.

    Question Question...

    Would the power supply be efficient for ONE Geforce 8800 Ultra? I mean, does it limit the power to 150w per connector? Thank you.

    The Booster X3 is complied with any NVIDIA & ATI one graphic card that includes ATI HD 2900XT & NVIDIA 8800Ultra or 8800GTX. And also it supports 150W per connector. The Real power: 300W; the Maxmium power is 400W.
