Cookings not that hard you know even I can do it after a fair few beers and still get very good results.
Pasta - easy to cook, it's just boiling water and placing it in until nice and cooked.
Pasta sauces - Cheap enough, but if you experiment enough you can make your own. I've found extra mature cheddar (grated), Salad Cream, and ham or bacon (chopped) nicely and mixed together is a cracking combo
Chicken - Again, frozen bags of chicken can be fairly cheap and can be used for a variety of dishes. At the moment my favourite is spicy chicken fajitas which I ate loads of at weekend.
Lastly - cheap kebabs can more than likely be sourced from near the uni itself.
really wouldnt recommend going for the tesco value chicken or any other value chicken. Theres a reason why its so cheap. My flat m8 buys it and u can see the hairs on it still, and the wounds where they been dragged out. Just get chicken when its on offer, which is 90% of the time. 2 for £5 etc

turkey is much cheaper than chicken with fairly similar taste if u fancy cutting costs, but im all about the chicken.
Chicken slice down the middle, stuff with regular cheese, close up again,
Put on foil and drown in nandos sauce
Wrap the foil up and lob in the oven
Get some rice going
Take chicken out, put on the bed of rice, and pour the source from the foil over the rice
Made manyer lady friend with that cuisine

Actually, in the freezer section there is the Lakeland £2.99 frozen chicken breasts which are good quality for what they are.
Always check the Yellow Label specials... I've had some amazing bargains from there... chicken for £1.28 etc
Pasta, pick your variety, various pasta sauces, then if your feeling adventurious experiment with a few differnt things, cheap quick and tasty!
Failing that cheese on toast is always a good choice!
and healthy bah..... you can work it off along with the debts in 3 years

Another pasta vote.....get the decent stuff, as it's still great value for money...
Buy some pinenuts, toast them in a frying pan until lightly brown. Put to one side. Finely chop garlic, toss it into some oil heating in a pan, throw in the cooked pasta (al dente ftw, can't be dealing with soggy pasta) and stir it around. 1 minute before serving put in a couple of handfuls of young spinach leaves, and stir it around. Pour out onto plate stir in pine nuts, grate some parmesean on top, then use a potato peeler to add some paper thin slices of parmesean as well. It's gorgeous.
My favourite, if you're entertaining, or feeling flush. Roast a chicken, pour the juices into the serving bowl, shred the chicken, plus a couple of handfuls of sultanas, stir the cooked pasta into the juices from the chicken, along with the chicken and sultanas, and serve.

I always found Super Noodles worked quite well as a filler for most other ingredients (and the walls if left to dry )
Other than that, one thing I'd suggest investing in is a wok and a spice rack. In combination you can make many simple ingredients come out to be a decent tasting meal. For example there's a variety of dishes that can be made with chopped tomotoes, a couple of veggies and some kind of meat plus whatever spices you feel like at the time. Best part is, you can get up to 4 meals from one set of ingredients, so if you have the freezer space, make up several meals worth in one go and then microwave the others as you need it.
Pasta (wholegrain)
Rice (brown)
Noodles
Tuna (cheap and very, very healthy)
Mince Beef (spag bol)
Go the supermarket just before it closes and get reduced stuff
