    student/fellow paupers recipes

    ritey then, i recon some students should share there cooking-for-no-cash recipes. here's mine :

    Pasta n Balls
    all is bought from Asda Smartprice range, prices are approximate due to memory loss)
    - big bag of smartprice pasta twists 35p a huuuge bag
    - bolognese sauce - 30p a big jar
    - tin of meatballs in tomato sauce - 16p
    - garlic paste - stolen from housemate, no idea of price
    - Molten Lava chilli sauce - stolen from braver housemate

    boil up a bowlfull of pasta in some water. pre-heat with kettle and make a cup of tea at same time.
    drain the pasta in a coulinder, then put back in the pan, along with about a 1/4 of the jar of bolognese sauce and the whole tin of meatballs in their sauce.
    stick in 1/2 teaspoon of garlic paste and a decent splash of chilli sauce (adjust amount to no. of dead tastebuds required)
    heat it all up over a medium heat until it tastes hot, whilst drinking tea. keep stirring so it doesn't stick.
    serve in a bowl with some bread (smartprice thick-cut, 20p a loaf) and a glass of cheap pop.

    beans avec toast et sausages...

    get cheap loaf. and tin of beans avec sausages from lidls... not the best place in the universe. But I have gone through a few years of food testing and now know what is edible

    loaf ??? p ; <- up to your discretion really.

    "Tuna pasta pesto" me and my housemate pretty much lived on this for about 4 years.

    Here goes, Boil up some pasta, nice cheap value/sava/smartprice etc, about 30p
    Tin of Tuna, between 50p and a pound I think, not too much anyway and a little goes a long way.
    Some Pesto, probably about half a jar for 2 or three people (I've never made this for fewer than two people even when I wanted to). About £1.
    And that's it for the essentials, but really you want to add at least one of the following for the real thing:
    A packet of sausages, fried and chopped into smallish chunks: about 80p if you're cheap.
    An onion, again chopped up pretty small and fried, gently (ie not caramelised), about 30p.
    Mushrooms, chopped and fried, this is a luxury bit at a whapping £1.60 for a punnet from Sainsbury's. But the cooking mushrooms and a bit cheaper and only have a little more chicken muck stuck to them (sorry, compost).
    A Handfull of frozen peas, they're green so they must be good for you, about 10p.
    Anything else you have lying around - Free if it's in your housemate's cupboard.

    If you add in the extras, it's cheaper to make this is bulk, we used to feed 4 or 5 people for less than about 4 pounds I reakon, so not too pricey.

    Right, I'm off to boil up some pasta..

    Even MORE basic:

    Bread, 2 slices...toasted.
    1 Tin Tomatos..heated and poured onto toast, still whole.

    Grind of pepper. Serve

    Heaven...awesome for hangovers....lots of fruit fluid, and toast is always good for bad heads/stomachs

    Couple of quick cheesy receipes:


    Classic Cheese on Toast:
    ==================

    Serves 1

    I'd be suprised if you've never made this one, but I'll post just incase

    2x White bread (medium-thick sliced)
    Cheese of your choice (Cheshire is my fave, but also Mild Cheddar and Lancashire)
    Branston Small Chunk Pickle

    Approx cost: 45p (per serving)

    1) Take your bread and butter it.
    2) Slice cheese and place on bread (4-6 slices usually does it)
    3) Stick it under a very hot grill until the bread between the slices is nicely toasted
    4) Remove and transfer to a plate
    5) Promptly coat in Branston Pickle

    Btw - if you are wondering, you do not actually toast both sides of the bread, as the bready underside is all part of the flavour!


    Cheese on Toast with a Kick:
    =====================

    Serves 1

    Same as above but with these extras:
    Cayenne Pepper
    Tabasco Sauce

    Approx Cost: 60p (per serving)

    1) Take your bread and butter it.
    2) Slice cheese and place on bread (4-6 slices usually does it)
    3) Sprinkle plenty of Cayenne Pepper evenly over them
    4) Dribble Tabasco on to the cheese to taste
    5) Stick it under a very hot grill until the bread between the slices is nicely toasted
    6) Remove and transfer to a plate
    7) Promptly coat in Branston Pickle (optional)


    Cheese and Beans on Toast:
    =====================

    Serves 2

    4x White bread (medium-thick sliced)
    Cheese of your choice (Cheshire is my fave, but also Mild Cheddar and Lancashire)
    1x Can of beans

    Approx Cost: 50p (per serving)

    1) Put the beans in a pan and warm them (alternatively warm in the microwave)
    2) Toast your bread
    3) Grate some cheese
    4) Spoon the beans out of the pan and evenly distribute onto the toasts
    5) Sprinkle the cheese over the toasts so that it thinly covers all the beans
    6) Place your toasts under the grill until the cheese has melted and gone slightly golden
    7) Serve


    Mini-Pizzas:
    ========

    Serves 4

    An idea I got from my old college where they used to serve this kind of thing at the break time.

    4x White Baps
    2x Large tomatoes
    Mild Cheddar Cheese (or Mozzarella if you can afford it)
    Dried Mixed Herbs
    1x Pepper (green or red) (optional)
    Topping of your choice (optional)

    Approx Cost:
    70p (per serving excluding topping with pepper)
    60p (per serving excluding topping and pepper)

    1) Cut the Baps in half (if not already sliced for you)
    2) Place face (cut side) down and toast the other side
    3) Butter the face side
    4) Slice up the tomatoes and distribute evenly on the half-baps
    5) Grill for a few minutes to soften and cook the tomatoes
    6) Grate the cheese and distribute over the half-baps until covered
    7) Sprinkle with mixed herbs
    8) Grill for a few minutes until the cheese melts and goes slightly golden
    9) Slice the pepper and distribute evenly
    10) Top with the topping of your choice and serve
