    Hotcross buns

    Anyone know how to get a cross on a hotcross bun?

    As far as I know....cut two strips of foil, lay them across the top of a bun in a cross shape then press them into the dough slightly, then bake. The foil protects the bit of the bun underneath it which stays whiter than the rest of it.

    I am told it is a mixture of lard, flour and oil IIRC, maybe something else. It's piped onto the top of the buns to give the cross shape.

    My mom made some today and used pastry for the crosses.

    They were v. v. nice

    Dash down to the supermarket and get some, although i dont like them too much (hot X Buns that is lol!)

    Marks and Spencers and Sainsbury's sell nice ones! (cheaply)

    In big batch runs, the cross is piped on using a runny sweet dough, when I've done them at home, I glaze the bun with beaten egg to make it brown up, and lay a cross of extra bun dough over the top and galze that two mins from thr end of cooking with a little milk.
