    Re: 800Mhz RAM being annoying.

Could just be a compatibility thing?

    *quick google*

Is the RAM double sided? according to this thread on whirlpool the motherboard will only support 8GB over 4 banks (i.e. 4 single-sided DIMMs)...

Checked and confirmed on ASUS website:
**Due to chipset limitation, this motherboard only supports up to the total of 4 ranks (4 sides in total) of RAM at max.

What does double sided ram mean sorry? What ram do I have to get, he currently has Corsair 800Mhz 5-5-5-18 PC2-6400.

This is the ram (Can't post a link to the product sadly):

    Corsair 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2 800MHz/PC2-6400 (5-5-5-12) XMS2 Memory Kit Non-ECC Unbuffered CL5 1.9V

    Re: 800Mhz RAM being annoying.

doubled-sided just means having memory chips on both sides of the sticks. It looks from a quick google like the Corsair XMS probably is double sided, which I think means you'll only ever be able to run 2 sticks of that memory in your motherboard, although it's not really clear if it's 4 "ranks" of memory full stop, or 4 ranks of memory once you get above a certain limit

    Yeah, I see. Cheers dude.

It's my mates motherboard, I'd never scrimp on a budget board myself.

So could I put in 2x2GB of any double sided DDR2 800Mhz RAM?

    Re: 800Mhz RAM being annoying.

That's what it looks like to me, yeah. From the ASUS website quote it looks like the most you can ever have is 4 ranks, so you will always be fine with 2 sticks of memory, right up to (presumably) 2x 4GB for a total memory of 8GB. However, if you want to run 3 or 4 sticks they need to be single sided...
