8GB or 16GB

So i'm wondering with the new PC i'm building should i go for 8GB or 16GB, looking at the GSKILL RIPJAWS X.

I do gaming, CS5 work, some 3d rending, etc.. running Windows 7 64bit...would going to 16GB be worth it or would these kind of activities not really take advantage?

Until the price of DDR3 increases, there's no reason not to go for 16GB. For example, you may decide to run a VM or two for various purposes. I have 8GB DDR2 (from back when DDR2 was cheap) & two VMs always running, and I often run low on memory. Also, ramdisks are awesome.

If 8GB of GSKILL RIPJAWS X cost only 40 pounds I will definitely go for 16GB. DDR3 is cheap today and you will be using it for another 3-4 years (DDR4 2015?). So even your programs don't utilize all 16GB today you are covered in the future.

If you are using big air cooler make sure it is not going to block ram slots on the motherboard. Also it could be harder to overclock RAM when all slots are populated.

My brother is a graphic designer and he recommended I get 16gb of Ram. He says he can tell the difference in photoshop (:

IMHO for rendering, design, etc stuff... more RAMs are better. So go ahead with 16GB

You can never have too much in my view. Epsecially if you're building a system to last years.

def go for 16gb. it may be overkill, but you can never really have enough so long as your rig is upto it! the more the better in my eyes.

if windows 7 home basic , your limited to 8GB and 16GB for windows 7 home premium

I'm running 16gb of Ram on my rig, bought at a good price. Would recommend going for it if the price is right.
I use VMs and can run a couple at the same time, have noticed a great difference in ripping and re-encoding blurays.

You wont see any improvement from 8-16 as you would probably never use all 16 gigs but it is nice to have at the belly of the beast just in case so if you have the money why not if not then just go with the 8 will be more then enough

Given that he specifically states modelling and Photoshop, those are two areas which will eat any RAM you give it. It's not hard to hit max out 16Gig when working with todays game assets (more so when you load an engine too!)

I say go 16gb of ram, if you can find a good price Also saves you from ordering and waiting if you get 8gb and require more later
