i have a 24 inch dell monitor from 2006 (from bargain forums : ) with inbuilt card reader, the SD card can't read a 4 or 16 gb SD card...
i figure that i have to buy an external reader as the only workaround

i had a dell from about 2005/6 and i manged to upgrade the card reader by a firmware update. if you google the make and model you might be able to do the same with the monitor. i presume you plug it in via USB for the card reader
million to one chance but are the card's themselves formatted as FAT16?
ie does the card work at it's full size in OTHER devices? or is it the card limiting it?

I use a USB type adaptor for my SD cards.
A few pounds will buy you one.
will that monitor not be USB 1 and not faster USB 2 ??
SD cards can be no larger than 2GB.
SDHC is another format, using the same physical dimensions as SD, with the limit increased to 32GB.
SDXC is another format, using the same physical dimensions as SD, with the limit increased to 2048GB.
Sounds like your card reader only does SD.
my old dell monitors the same, ended up buying a USB reader from kingofflash.co.uk for 50p

Pretty cheap. Not used that device, but have bought from that shop before, without problem!

This might be of some help

I and some others once wrote a driver and filesystem for an SD card for a PIC with 4KB memory. A sector size larger than 512b would have been... a problem.
The trouble with in-built things like this is you're a slave to whether or not they get firmware updates. Actually I wonder if some of the cheaper ones are mostly "soft" readers without firmware, and therefore a driver update would do. I'll stop waxing...
Bought one of these Integral USB SD card readers from amazon the other day after failing to find a driver for the SD reader in my laptop that supports DMA (was getting very slow read speeds and high CPU usage, not ideal)
Have to say I'm very impressed, especially for less then £2 inc delivery!
On reflection though, not impressed with the amount of time I wasted on crappy drivers when a new reader was only £2
