    Need urgent help

I have four slots in my mb

now i have 1+1gb ddr2 in dual channel

thinking to buy another 2gb in couple of days

what should i buy another 1+1[then all my slots will be covered][it will be 1+1+1+1]

or should i sell my 1+1gb and buy 2+2 gb

This is the last time i am going to put anything in my rig so performance is the focus

which configuration will have better performance

    Re: Need urgent help

There won't be any performance difference. I don't see many reasons to not just buy another 2x1GB, to be honest. I doubt it'll save you anything to get 2x2GB and sell your old memory, so unless you're overclocking (having 4 sticks can limit the overclock on some systems) or you can't buy memory that matches the speed and timings of your existing memory, just get another 2x1GB and you're good to go

    Re: Need urgent help

Or buy 2x2gb cos it's so cheap and run 3gb per channel in full dual channel mode.

    (ie a 1gb and a 2gb stick per channel)

Good plan if you're on a 64bit OS, tbh, but obviously no point if you're on 32bit still.

2x1GB DDR2 is about £25, 2x2GB is just over £40. I doubt you'd get £15 if you tried to sell your existing memory, so definitely keep what you have and add more. If you have a 64bit OS, getting another 4GB and running with 6GB may see some benefits, and certainly won't cause any problems. As I said earlier, try to get the same speed and timings as your existing RAM.

Yes, if your motherboard is setup AABB in terms of channels.

None really, unless you've got something that needs the RAM in which case it's a HUGE benefit.

Not a huge problem, but you can expect to overclock less well with four slots populated than with two.

    Re: Need urgent help

Follow the advice in the user manual: Stick the 2x2GB sticks in one colour slots and the 2x1GB sticks in the other colour. This is basically what Kalniel was saying about AABB configuration. Channel one then has 1+2GB and channel two 1+2GB.

if you've lost the manual/never had it to start with it can be downloaded from here:

    Re: Need urgent help

Best thing to do is read your motherboard manual for what kind of set up you've got.

But yes just add the new stuff into the empty slots.

    Re: Need urgent help

oh and 6GB RAM makes RAM intensive software wayyyy better. CAD software/3D modelling and analysis software etc all benefit from the extra. As do some games, though not all by any means.
