    Memory upgrade newbie question

I'm wanting to upgrade the memory on my PC, the mobo is an Asus A8N-E. It currently has 2x256mb. If I install 2x1gb matched pair, do I have to remove the old ram and use those same first 2 slots, or do I add it to the 2 currently empty slots for a total of 2.5gig?

    Re: Memory upgrade newbie question

You can just add it. The whole system should run at the speed of the slowest RAM, but I doubt you'd see any improvement by running just with the 2GB vs. 2.5GB.

    Re: Memory upgrade newbie question

I would stick to the 2GB.

Man never seen 512MB in a PC for years. How old is your machine?

    Re: Memory upgrade newbie question

Thanks for the advice, I think I'll use the two empty slots and get 2.5gb, see if that works.

My computer's about 6 years old, maybe 7.

A8N-E, I used to have one of those, really nice motherboard.

Make sure you get the right DDR version. I think it was old first version DDR

    Re: Memory upgrade newbie question

I was using 2x 256MB DDR at 500Mhz with terribly high timings.
One of it's kind back in thoee days in my country (Slovakia ages ago).
And my beliwed ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe.
    Check compatibility for sure.
