DD3 memory in a DD2 motherboard slot?

Hi All,

I have a Gigabyte GA-P31-DS3L motherboard - will be installing a ssd and win7 (64bit) on it - and thought I would take advantage of being able to use more than 3.5Gb of ram and putting in 8Gb instead (I currently have 4Gb onboard)

Problem is that the board is a DDR2 slot board and that memory seems out of date now (and hence expensive!) so I was wondering if I would have any problems putting DDR3 memory in?

DDR3 won't be compatible. You'll have to use DDR2. Have a look around for 2nd hand DDR2 would be my advice.

Upgrade to a FM2 system or live with 4GB. TBH, 99% of home users do not use 4GB.

upgrade to new mobo much better bet. DDR3 way faster than DDR2. Save your money, don't buy obsolete tech.

Maybe time to get out your wallet for a new system, an i5 or even i3 setup with a SSD and Win 7 will bring a much more fun experience then your old Intel Core 2 unit.

Darn - I just got rid of 4GB DDR2, as well!!
It might still be around, actually...

Save your money, don't buy obsolete tech.

Which is why I am waiting for DDR4, which is apparently out in Early 2014. I'd more suggest picking up DDR2 second hand cheap, then upgrade to the new standard when it's at a reasonable level.
