16gb for gaming is an overkill and just isn't needed atm because games won't utilise it and probably won't for a good 2-3 years

I had 8GB until a few weeks ago when I got a new MOBO that let me use my old 4gb for 12gb total 8GB I maxed out easily it limited me less than my cpu but still limited, and that was when gaming. Browsing I only use 2-3gb with currently 5gb used on 583 Chrome tabs, anti virus, utorrent, catalyst control center menu up, Asus suite II, Skype, 4 MPC films paused, Winrar, Realtek audio manager.
So go with 8gb and you'll still have an amazing experience and if possible wait until 16gb if your motherboard supports it for 24gb if it is 16gb only and not 32gb I'd say go for the 16GB now
Edit: Btw when gaming now I use 11gb but if I overclocked gpu more and that allowed me to play games at better resolutions I'd max the 12
I've got 16GB of mismatched RAM in my rig right now but I think I'm going to take half of it out again so I can run it at a higher frequency. Even in BF4 I never see the RAM usage go much over 6GB.
Buy just 8gb for now, I have never seen my ram usage go above 5gb.
Sims 3, WoW(multibox) and believe it or not Minecraft LOL are the games that currently use around that much Skyrim and X-Rebirth also use a bit but not quite that much.
Speaking of Sims 3 why is such a big company so bad with AMD cards that without external fps limiter the game is unplayable so annoying.
For gaming no. If you want to run virtual machines then it would be a good idea to have more ram. For the price you will not have a noticeable difference for gaming.
If you're going for 8gb, would you recommend a single dimm with the prospect of upgrading in the future or go for two dimms and use dual-channel? any comparisons out there on this subject? only two slots available since it's a itx board.
If you have the cash lying around, wait until a sale of a decent brand comes around and then pounce, I'd say. I recently got round to buying an extra 4gb of ram and was shocked to find it at around £50. If I knew DDR2 prices would get that high I would have upgraded far earlier.
I run 24Gig of ram but I use a large chunk of it as a Ramdrive to play games from - faster that SSD, less wear/tear on said SSD.
Even with 24Gig I'm starting to run into limits now - New games and heavily modded older games like Skyrim are now getting over 18Gig, leaving 6 for OS & game.
I have been running 8gb for a few years now and that is with the paging files disabled and I have yet to have 1 instance when I get a low memory warning.
Max I have ever used is about 5gb.
I agree 8GB is fine for most things including gaming.
I do other things besides gaming myself like running virtuals, so if I can get it at a good price, I tend to go with 16GB from the start. I also read somewhere that it's better to have 2 sticks rather than 4. So if you think there's any chance you'll need 16GB at a later date, I'd do it from the start with 2 x 8GB sticks rather than end up with 4 x 4GB sticks later.
For current gaming purposes, would 8gb of 1866Mhz> 16gb 1600?
I think you would struggle to measure a difference even with benchmarks. You certainly wouldn't actually notice the difference - RAM speed has very, very little impact on gaming framerates.
Unless you are talking about using the integrated graphics in certain AMD APU's, in which case yes it certainly would be faster.
get 8gb until ddr 4 is released
