    Splitting a 4x4Gb kit

I recently ordered some used RAM off eBay (yes please send abuse via PM instead of cluttering the thread )

It was advertised as a 8GB(2x4GB) kit.

The RAM arrived yesterday, but the stickers show that the sticks came from a 16GB (4x4GB) kit. They are the correct manufacturer, brand and speed, but have slightly different product codes signifying they came from a 4x4GB kit.

Not being a RAM know-it-all, and not having built the system it is going in to (Still waiting for the chassis...!), will the RAM still work fine in a 2x4GB configuration?

    Yes, it'll work fine.

(or rather, if it doesn't work, it's not because of that).

Exactly what Kaniel says, it will work just fine, actually in all my years I mixed all sorts of modules and they always worked (even really off ones). God bless JEDEC (?)

    Re: Splitting a 4x4Gb kit

The whole purpose of these kits is that they test those individual DIMMs and make sure they work properly together at the rated speed and timings, and thus guarantee it to work in that configuration.

If you were to purchase two separate kits (say, a 2x4 Gb and another 2x4 Gb) and use them both together to get 16 Gb, it would probably work, but isn't absolutely guaranteed to, in terms of the manufacturer wouldn't accept it as a "fault" to not work in that configuration.

Going the other way, using only 2 of 4 DIMMs from a kit, would never be a problem, unless of course they are just faulty in general.
