[HELP] PC won't post after enabling XMP

    Components:

Mobo - Z490 Gigabyte Aorus Elite
    CPU - Intel i7-10700K
    RAM - ThermalTake Toughram 16GB (2x8GB) DDR 3600Mhz.

The base speed on the ram was set at 1333mhz so I enabled the XMP profile which made me PC unable to post and after a few tries, sent me back to the BIOS.

I manually set the frequency to 2993 (i7-10700k max base speed) and it worked fine, but any attempt to go above this just cause me the same issue. Sometime having to try several boots to get back into the BIOS.

Is it possible for me to run the full 3600Mhz on my build?

I'm a beginner at this, only got my build last week and have been researching online since.

Is your memory on the QVL (approved) list for your motherboard at it's rated speed? I don't think I've heard of it.
In the first instance, upgrade your BIOS on a stable platform (no XMP / 2933 for safety) and try again. You might need to try looser timings. You would also do well to contact Gigabyte support as they may have a beta bios with better memory compatability.
It might be you just got unlucky on your RAM choice. I don't think these kind of problems are widespread on Z490 these days.

Thanks for the reply. It does appear to be on the Mobo approved list from their support page.

As I said I'm pretty much new to this so bare with me. I think it may be the CPU as it will run at 2933 but not at anything above. Is there anything I need to do with the CPU to allow it to run with higher RAM speeds above the base?

The timings thing I've no clue about, is there somewhere you'd recommend to read up on that and I'll give that a try?

I should also mention, its called ToughRam not Rough

Re: [HELP] PC won't post after enabling XMP

As it is in the QVL list, Gigabyte should be able to help you get it running at full speed. You should not need to loosed timings from XMP in this case. Drop them a support email or ask on their official forums if they answer there. Good luck!

Re: [HELP] PC won't post after enabling XMP

Is the RAM itself set to the 1.35V(IIRC) XMP usually needs to operate at the higher frequencies? If not its usually 1.2V at the lower frequencies AFAIK. Also what CPU cooler are you using??

I'll check what the volts are set too tonight. I'm currently using the Corsair H100i RGB Platinum but moving over to the NZXT Kraken Z63

Sorted! Up'd the Voltage to 1.4V and it worked a treat, thank you CAT!

Late to the party but I had this exact same issue, you'd think they'd automatically set the voltage higher when its coming off XMP, caught me out twice now
