    core unlocking on AM3+ motherboards

I know that AM3+ motherboards are going to support AM3 cpus but will they support core unlocking on AM3 cpus? I currently have a phenon II x3 720be. I googled the batch number of mine and discovered that the 4th core is unlockable on it (my current board has the wrong southbridge).

I'll probably get an AM3+ motherboard soon anyway just wondered if anyone knew what my chances will be like of unlocking the 4th core on my phenom II while I wait for bulldozer!?

Some gigabyte boards with the 850 Southbridge claim to unlock cores. with what they call "Auto Unlock Support"

I've been looking at new motherboards too as my current one isn't good at unlocking the 4th core either.

I know that the mid range of Asus am3+ motherboards come with the core unlocker such as the M5a88 and M5a78 however not the +£100 models.

Re: core unlocking on AM3+ motherboards

My new gigabyte AM3+ (UD5) managed to unlock my 4th core ... it was unstable though, I don't know if voltage increases would have helped it but since I was having so many problems with my HD 6950 I couldn't be bothered to worry about it. Still got it on 3 cores now, might have a fiddle and see if some voltage increases fix the problem. I don't think my chip is the best unlocking/overclocking chip, whenever I run it out of it's parameters it always seems to throw it's toys out the pram. I was hoping this new motherboard would fix that, maybe it can, I haven't tinkered that much at all, i'll report back if I have any luck.

Re: core unlocking on AM3+ motherboards

I ran my 720 unlocked at 2800 on all 4 cores for a day. and it seemed ok. But, My motherboard is not ideal for it unfortunately and can only do it with a beta BIOS which takes about 5 attempts to start the machine.

I notice that the temperature readings were wrong too but, Again I think it is a problem with the Mobo or BIOS.

If I was using DDR3 I'd change the board but, If I change the board I'll have to buy new memory too so I think I'll stay put and just use 3 cores for the time being.
