audio collision - your council pls.

    Hi:

I've got an ASUS P5RD1-VM motherboard. There are three jacks on the rear of the motherboard to connect to an external 5.1 amplifier (configurable a variety of ways).

There is a second connection on the motherboard labelled AAFP that is supposed to have two configurations: Azalia and Legacy AC'97. The BIOS allows the AZALIA to be enabled and disabled but when disabled, it disables all of the sound ports. There is no separate method to enable the Legacy AC'97 or the jacks.

So, here's the problem: I enabled AZALIA; connected up the 5.1 amplifier using all of the jacks on the rear of the motherboard. That leaves me with the connections on the interior for the "front panel audio I/O". I connected output to input on the amp and then output from the amplifier back to the input side of the front connector on the computer. All I get is feedback across the bus of the amp.

The objective is to have sound from movies etc piped through the sound card and into the amplifier. Then, I have a large selection of tapes that I would like to digitize. To do so, I figured I could use the motherboard connections tied into different connection points on the amp. It seems that the two are tied together somehow.

Any suggestions on how to connect this up.

Just to clarify: are you taking the rear outputs to the amp then the output from the amp into the front connectors? That's what it reads like and if so then why are you doing that?

    Hi Bluecube:

    Yup.

The three coloured outputs from the motherboard to the amp are configured for 5+1 signal support for surround sound. This means that I can't configure those ports as line-in for digitizing my tapes.

The front connection point on the motherboard is my only option for digitizing on the computer. I connected my source (the distribution bus on the amp) to the input side of the motherboard connection. I have six music sources and each is connected to an input on the amp. The amp serves as a control point for each input.
