Gigabyte Z77-D3H vs ASUS P8Z77-V LX

hi, so the Gigabyte Z77-D3H is slightly cheaper than the ASUS P8Z77-V LX while sporting similar specs, but what are your opinions on which is the better deal?
I've always used gigabyte so know my way around their setup, but I've heard very good things about asus' setup...

    thanks for reading

    Hi again

There is precious little difference, if you want to stick with Gigabyte feel free, if you are not sure flip a coin, both are fine.

Picked up the D3H as a replacement for another board the other day and i feel for the price, you couldn't do much better.

They are both good manufacturers so should not be much of a problem whichever one you choose.

yeah after more research they are both obviously solid boards for the price, good overclockers too, thanks for all your answers

Re: Gigabyte Z77-D3H vs ASUS P8Z77-V LX

actually they are both bad overclocking boards. They can OC but limited to light overclocking due to lower power phases. In overclocking, the more power phases the motherboard has, the better it is for overclocking. Both motherboards have a 4+1+1 power phase. Other boards have more power phases like P8Z77-M PRO (which I'm using right now) that has 8+1+1 power phases. Maximus V Gene has 8+4+2 power phases. But if you're just looking at those two and not really into overclocking, both would be fine.

The Maximus GENE is nearly twice the price, though.

just making a comparison regarding power phases since ROG boards are known for its overclocking capabilities

Isn't power phases just one of those advertising things?

I'm sure I remember watching a video of an Intel engineer saying that.

Like anything, it eventually becomes fud.

Power phases are components of the motherboard. Those are the black cubes located around the CPU socket which are sometimes covered by a heatsink.
    http://www.legitreviews.com/images/r...ase-design.jpg

More Phases = Less Load per channel, and to a more limited extent lower heat. Thus, making a motherboard with more power phase more efficient in overclocking.
The Gigabyte z77x-up7 for example got 32 power phases and got a record breaking 7.1 Ghz in some competition held somewhere.

Re: Gigabyte Z77-D3H vs ASUS P8Z77-V LX

i do like some light overclocking and both boards i'm looking at are under £90 and various reviewers have overclocked intel cpus from around 3.4 to 4.4. now as far as i'm concerned that's a pretty decent overclock for a quad core. if i can get a system built using buy now pay later then i may consider the ASUS P8Z77-V, but it may be superfluous for my needs

It is, i've seen plenty of good reviews for the two original boards you were considering. And a board that can sustain overclocks up to and over 4Ghz is enough for any typical user. Spare the cash and use it better elsewhere if you've got to spend it.
Like most things these days, there are various factors involved and it's more than just the power phases that affect what clocks you can reach and keep safely. Go by the reviews and what you can afford.

Re: Gigabyte Z77-D3H vs ASUS P8Z77-V LX

Yeah I saved a few quid and ordered the Gigabyte Z77-D3H. i believe the board has a turbo mode in the setup which overclocks the board a little. I'm no stranger to setting multipliers, voltages and testing for stability, but I'd prefer to just flick a switch and forget about it. Will turbo mode automatically set correct voltages etc or should I still manually overclock?

Re: Gigabyte Z77-D3H vs ASUS P8Z77-V LX

I can't say from experience but i expect it will, but only for the lesser OC'ing it'd do automatically compared to what you could achieve manually. Just keep an eye on things and stress test for stability as you would normally and you should be ok.
