    1366 or 1155 Board ?

    Hi,

    I am looking for a 2nd user board/CPU and am undecided between an 1155 board/CPU or a 1366 board/CPU.

Would anyone please be able to give me a very brief summary of the pros and cons between the two socket types? One thing I have noticed is that the 1366 kit seems to hold its resale value quite well?

    Thx

Socket 1155 is newer, and has a more efficient and faster range of consumer CPUs. 1366 is older and supports older CPUs, some of which are more suited for server type operations (the replacement for 1366 is skt 2011).

I could be wrong (and someone will no doubt swiftly correct me if I am!) but there is current glut of second hand hexacore Xeons that will run on some 1366 boards. They're not particularly expensive for the amount of power you get so you may be interested in having a gander at them. You can get them on eBay from the US.

    Thought I'd mention it FYI.

I came across this point when looking into these board but I think that the xeons do not run in any 1366 board, only some combinations work OK. If I knew precisely which combination of xeon CPU and 1366 board was working OK it definitely would be worth a look.

It was Gigabyte boards that had the near 100% success rate. MSI also seemed to rate quite highly as they apparently provide Dell with their server boards. However, I agree it's a bit of a minefield so it's worth doing a bit of research.

Would you happen to know if it was all models across the Gigabyte 1366 range or was it just a few specific boards. I have heard MSI have a good reputation with the build quality of their UD5 and UD7 range of boards. I will have a check to see which ones support the Xeon CPU's.

    Re: 1366 or 1155 Board ?

    *cough*

To be honest I suspect most retail desktop boards, other than Intel ones, would work just fine. I have 2 Xeon L5639 CPUs that I picked up relatively cheaply from eBay (US). One is running in a Gigabyte G1 Sniper, the other in a 'proper' sever / workstation board that I also picked up from eBay (UK) on the cheap (I don't think the seller knew what it was). If you don't need / want 6 cores then going with the more modern 1155 / 1150 based kit is probably cheaper overall as all 1366 motherboards seem to fetch a pretty penny still.

There are plenty of cheap 4 core 1366 CPUs out there, e.g.

My pick would be one of the 32nm chips though those are a bit more expensive and the 6 core ones seem to have gone up in price recently too. I think all the 5600 Xeons are 32nm:

    Re: 1366 or 1155 Board ?

I have an X5650 in my P6X58D-E. Good news is it runs and can cope with the larger dimms (two 8GBs) downside is tri-channel ram seems to not work. Saved 35w on the TDP and got an extra 2 cores over my old 920.

To be honest X58 boards are the rare thing, not the CPUs.

    Re: 1366 or 1155 Board ?

I could be wrong but isn't 1366 getting on a bit now? If you want to be able to upgrade in future without switching boards again I'd think going for the more modern one was the best bet, so 1150 or 2011 if you were going down server route (I think 1366 is server?).

1151 is more recent that 1366 though iirc (don't take my word on it, I have the world's worst memory).

    Re: 1366 or 1155 Board ?

I am looking at the older boards in the hope of a bit of value due to restricted budget. However, the 1366 boards seem to be holding their value quite well considering their age.

Once you get beyond a certain time value can hold or even increase as the parts aren't available on the general market and people look to repair existing systems.

    Re: 1366 or 1155 Board ?

I think there are a fair few folk building VM servers too - cheapest way into 6 Intel cores and 6 DIMM slots (without needing to go for ECC / registered RAM), though the prices have gone up enough to make the socket 2011 motherboards (if not the CPUs) look a lot more reasonable.

    Re: 1366 or 1155 Board ?

Even though LGA1366 holds its resale value, it's availability is much lower it is also a older chipset. The main pro for 1155 (or 1150) would be much better CPU support and availability.
