    Sabertooth X99 hestitant startup

Did my five year refresh on my gaming rig a while ago - switching from AMD Phenom II to a 5830k. In both cases I was using Asus Sabertooth, 990FXR2.0 in the old system, X99 in the new.

But I've noticed something slightly strange about the new setup. I'll press the power button and hear fans etc start for less than a second, (basically as if I'd just pinged the power button), then they spin down. There's a short delay (1-2 seconds) then they spin up again, stay running and the system goes through the boot sequence etc.

It's not a fault as such, because in every other* way the new setup is working fine, but it's just a bit strange - almost as if there's some capacitor etc on the new board that has to be fully charged before the system is allowed to start. PSU, case, graphics card and most of the storage was carried across from the old system, so I'm happy that any "problem" is not with them.

(* only other wierdness is that connecting the Akasa USB3.0 card-reader/front panel's Molex causes the optical drive - which is a SATA connection to not power up. Even if the two are on different cables).

My Asus X79 board does exactly the same thing, nothing to worry about. In fact many Intel boards I've had have done a similar thing if memory serves me right.

Just to add I've seen it plenty as well - I don't current have it so I don't remember what it was or whether there's something you can change to avoid it, just know that it's not unusual!

Again another one who has seen it plenty of times, last time kept doing it on a Gigabyte 1155 board.

    Re: Sabertooth X99 hestitant startup

It is memory training on the X99 chipsets when it does that due to the DDR4 memory. It can be a sign of instability with the RAM, I get it on my R5E every so often.

    Re: Sabertooth X99 hestitant startup

Many thanks guys - nice to know it's not necessarily a bad board, (mainly because the thought of having to tear down and rebuild isn't exactly thrilling at the moment). Like I said, it's just a curiosity for me - in everything else the new rig is performing nicely.

Which it darn well should do given the amount I paid for the new bits... (sorry, my mad Fifer missus rubbing off on me)

You could try running the memory in dual channel mode and swappping sticks in and out to see if you have duff module that might help.
