Asus strix b450-f max memory speed question

Hi everyone, I'm looking at getting the Asus strix b450-f mobo in the next few days along with ryzen 5 3600, I know the max speed of the board is 3200mhz(OC). I'm not sure if it means that If I buy a 3200mhz kit it would work OK or does if it mean I need to buy a slower speed kit and overclock it up to 3200mhz?

Re: Asus strix b450-f max memory speed question

The only way to avoid disappointment is to get the memory rated to run at the speed you want.

AFAIK only 3 companies make the actual memory chips. They then have different dies or revisions. The memory to get best over clocks will be Samsung b-die > micron revE > hynix cjr(?) / samsung d-die.

Before buying its worth checking which one you will be getting. Corsair buy chips from all the companies so you are not really guaranteed anything unless you can check the ver. Number which is conveniently written only on the sticks themselves. Crucial are a subsidiary of micron so the ballistic which used to be cheap all where rev E and a good buy. They should hit 3600+. Most of the ram sub 3000 is pretty meh.

Re: Asus strix b450-f max memory speed question

just got that board myself with the same CPU (scan bundle deal)

running 3600mhz at 3600mhz speeds. bough the corsair 3600 mhz ryzen optimised kit from scan too. figuring they wouldnt put ryzen optimised on it if it didnt work with ryzen.
and i did check in https://www.asus.com/uk/Motherboards.../HelpDesk_QVL/ first, and it seemed to be listed.

i'll have a look in the BIOS in a bit, see what the memory speed can go up to.. afaik it was around 4000mhz or so, but ill check that. (after dinner)

Interested to know what chips you got and what your fclk goes up to!

just looked.. yeah its not 4000 mhz its 6000 MHz

you go into AI Tweaker section. set the Ai Overclock tuner to D.O.C.P. Standard, from auto.
then that allows you to set the D.O.C.P to (in my case) to D.O.C.P. @DDR4-3597 18-22-22-40

further down that page it says memory frequency. set that to your memory speed aswell. mines DDR4 - 3600MHz.

not done any further testing than that. nor really plan to any time soon. i'm on a 350W PSU, doubt that'll handle any overclocks and increased wattage running through it.
dont even know what fclk is, so cant help with that Domestic_Ginger.

and i know its weird having a ROG mobo and not overclocking, but it was a bundle too good to miss. CPU was £175 , needed a mobo to go with it, bundle was ~£260 (when i bought it, bundle doesnt exist now ) so getting a mobo for £80 more was a no brainer, specially as its a £127 mobo on its own.

Not odd at all, I have a machine like that because the mobo was on a good offer. I seldom bother overclocking things these days, but Ryzen seems really pointless to overclock if it kills your single core boost which is useful for my work.

I just bought a 16GB Ballistix 3200 kit for a motherboard and APU setup. Plugged in, set DOCP on in the BIOS and it works lovely.
