Rewatched seasons 1 to 4 in the last couple of weeks and have just started a reread too in preparation!
I'm a bit behind on this tbh, only a few episodes into Season 4, might need a binge to catch up..
Apparently the series will conclude at Season 6:

Not all the books will end up in the series!
Yeah, book six does tie things up pretty nicely, if you discount the epilogue setting the stage for the Laconia arc.
I'd start at the beginning - it's reasonably close to the books, but there are differences. The show has amalgamated some characters, and others are quite different. For instance, Drummer doesn't appear until book four or five, but she replaces a couple of other characters from the earlier books.
Ashford is a completely different character.
I think it's a very rewarding series of books so I'd always say read from the start.

The showrunners said last year they were going to do the last few books too:

So I don't know why the sudden change of tact?? It could be Covid increasing production costs?? Also Cas Anwar who plays Alex Kamal, has gotten into trouble(lots of people have come forward regarding his behaviour) and has been fired for Season 6.We have actually talked about it, and I’m confident we can pull it off. I’m not sure I could say more than that, but I am confident that we can pull it off. It’s a really unique thing, and it is what I love about these novels and this adaptation is you get to do things that you generally don’t get to do.
The books are well-written enough that most of them could easily be adapted to be the final season in the show.
Interesting that they'll write out Alex, I guess of the four he's the most disposable.
Regarding S05E03, Thomas Jane needs to learn a bit more about directing action shots, but nonetheless this season rates to be the best so far (given book content, anyway)./
Cas Anwar had numerous allegations(of the sexual kind) leveled against him:

One of my complaints about the books (SPOILER ALERT) is that by virtue of REDACTED***. Particularly in the latest book, when *******REDACTED***** protomo****** ba**REDACTED*** you start to REDACTED they're REDACTED?
Alex is the least pivotal of the four, and probably the weakest actor. It's actually affecting my reading of the books now, I read the first book before I watched any of it then watched the first two seasons before I restarted the books, and now it's hard to conjure up an image that differs from the actor even though he's actually described differently in the books - older, balding, fat. I'm now associating the character Alex with the accusations, which is unfortunate.
