    Favourite War movies

With D-Day's 80th last week it had me digging out some War Movies
What are some of your favourites from any era?

    Here's a few of mine:

    - Beneath Hill 60. I think this is the only WWI based movie I have, but covers an interesting aspect from the Australian involvement.
"In 1916, the 1st Australian Tunnelling Company is tunneling beneath German fortifications and bunkers to detonate massive explosive charges."

    - Patton.
"The World War II phase of the career of controversial American general George S. Patton."

    - Rescue Dawn. - Based on the true story of Dieter Dengler. I really like film even it didn't do well at the box office.
"A U.S. fighter pilot's epic struggle of survival after being shot down on a mission over Laos during the Vietnam War."

    Re: Favourite War movies

There are so many in the 'war movie' genre. Watching the first 30 minutes of 'Saving Private Ryan' in a cinema was pretty memorable, even if the pacing of the rest of the film wasn't quite so good. 'Black Hawk Down' is definitely a favourite, as it's very close to the book on which it's based. Umm...'Full Metal Jacket', 'Platoon', 'Apocalypse Now', 'All Quiet on the Western Front', 'Das Boot'...to mention a few!

    Edit!

I loved 'Letters from Iwo Jima' too (more so than 'Flags of our Fathers')...definitely a favourite.

    Another Edit!

'Born on the Fourth of July' is also fantastic...the first film (in my opinion) that actually showed the Tom Cruise could act (the second being 'Magnolia').

    Re: Favourite War movies

So many films for me, some just for general action, some heart breaking tales, some completely made up, some based on real events. A think a few stand outs for me are :

    Schindlers List
    Fury
    Allied
    Dunkirk
    The Great Escape

Err does Bedknobs and Broomsticks count?

    Re: Favourite War movies

It's been a while since I've seen a war movie, and aside from the obvious ones, the first name that comes to mind is 'We Were Soldiers'. It's been decades, so maybe I need to rewatch it before recommending it, but I recall being impressed with it (if that's the right word) at the time.

    Re: Favourite War movies

Recently I really enjoyed 'The Covenant'. It is, by far, the best depiction of Afghanistan as a beautiful but flawed country. The accuracy of the parts set in Bagram were so good it had me pointing out all the flaws and things that were in the wrong place, etc.

    Re: Favourite War movies

    Depending on which war :

Starship Troopers, absolutely the best anti war film ever made.

Zulu, one of my all time favourite films of any genre.

    Apocalypse Now
    FMJ
    The Longest Day
    Platoon
    Hurt Locker

Cant stand Black Hawk Down, it just shows me how daft it can all be, keep sending more choppers and men to die...
    Cheers, David

    Re: Favourite War movies

Can't believe my ignorance to Apocalypse Now. Had no idea it was a war film, always thought it was some sci fi.

Will have to add to the collection

    Re: Favourite War movies

Apocalypto is also well worth a watch, a sort of war film between two southern american Maya / Mexican tribes, with the Spaniards arriving right at the end (not really a spoiler) ...

Hamburger Hill - Great cast, often cited by veterans as one of the most accurate depictions of a typical GI's experiences in Vietnam.

The Big Red One - Based on the directors own WW2 experiences with the same unit (16th Inf Regt, 1st Inf Div), again with a greast cast, including Mark Hamill.

Silent Night (2002) - Produced by a friend of mine, it's a lovely film based on a true story.
