It ruins the whole story and humour of the book and radio series, and i don't mean this as some kind of book fanboy being picky but they left some extremely key points out, such as EXPLAINING WHY HE ALWAYS HAS HIS TOWEL WITH HIM AND HOW IMPORTANT IT IS!!! If i remember correctly i think it's explained away like this:
Ford : "Oh, Can't forget your towel" or "You'll need a towel"
That's it!
And other things like the whole point of them drinking the beer and eating the nuts is to prepare them for going into hyperspace if i remember rightly, and in the film they don't even go into hyperspace on the Vogons ship, so why keep that in when they cut out so much other stuff.
It fails to both audiences as a film, the people who have read the book are all sat there going, "WTF, they've left out the Funniest and best bits, etc.." and the people who haven't read the book are sat there going "WTF is going on? I don't get it, why are they trying to find this planet? what's so special about it? where did the mice come from? Why the hell does he keep getting his towel out? etc..."
All that said though, i don't think the book really translates that well into a film format, there's no really great goal for the main character (Arthur obviously) in the book, he's just along for the ride, all he wants is a cup of tea, not really enough of a plot to drive a film forward tbh. The film to me only started to feel like a film when they started going into the new storyline that wasn't in the book, because it was written specifically for the film. In my opinion they probably would have done a lot better to re-make the tv series or something maybe, the story is better in series format.
I did find 2 bits funny though, when they get thrown off the vogons ship and the vogons at the end when Ford gets his towel out.
Damn, didnt expect to write that much.
Bottom line, i agree with you Zak
Marvin was the best thing in it.
And considering he look like a golf ball, thats makes it quite crap.

Knew you wouldn't like it Zakky, but have kept quiet so you could make your own mind up.
The only small consolation is that more people may read the books and realise what a genius Adams was.
They do explain why you should always carry a towel......
Did they? I only remember Ford going through the remains of Arthur's house and finding him one.
I agree. Having loved the radio plays, books and TV show, I thought the film was a mess. I could go on for ages about what they missed out. How they should have not included a whole new character and sub-plot and put more of the orginal jokes etc in. That just seemed stupid to me. I thought Zaphod was not that bad though, but I did not think they casted Ford well at all. And everyone going on about how 'cute' Marvin was. FFS, he was not ment to be cute. Cute is not funny. Far better in the books and radio play and original TV series.
But the bottom line is - that you could forgive all that if it was just FUNNY! I think I managed a couple of smiles tbo.
Half way through the credits they explain it. btw did anyone else spot the old marvin?Originally Posted by subucni

Yep, in the queue on the Vogons homeworld.Originally Posted by Knoxville
Did you notice the original TV Arthur Dent cast as the hologram warning as they approach Magrathea?
The film didn't do much for me. Lost a lot in translation. FP and AD were poorly cast.
