thats a good point about the rails......
all I want to do is rack 2 DL380s (2U each), 1 IBM 1U server and 1 Cisco 2924 (2U) switch!
you can get different rails - or what about shelves ? it makes it a little harder to take it in and out of the rack, but its not the end of the world.
There is always a way around it ,its just not often very pretty

Maplin sell rails for the rack, as long as the screw holes line up with the servers (and they should, since it's a standard and all), there shouldn't be any problems, thus why I thought bringing a shelled out server box would be a good idea before putting money over the counter.
I wonder if a two post rack would be better?
I'm nto sure how stable those are - the ones I've seen are fine for a patching frame , but I woudln't want to put anything heavier than a switch in one.

true and I would need to bold it to the floor anyway... I am not doing that!
Talk to http://www.racksolutions.co.uk/ ; they sell stretcher and reducer brackets for people whose racks are too shallow or too deep and they're pretty helpful.
