Question Long Distance DIY Wireless Networks

Anyone know much about these? I'm interested in setting up a fairly long range wireless LAN, cantenna style thing, with someone down the road, and need to know what sort of kit to get. 802.11g is available, but most sites still mention 802.11b, it this because B is a 'proper' standard, with a greater range, or simply cheaper?

Also, if I were to use the Belkin F5D6060u:

Would I be able to chop off an aerial and add a coax connection etc, or are there better cards suited to this?

    Thanks

There are cards with a co-ax connection on the back you can use.

If you need proper cantenna instructions let me know

When you say "fairly long range wireless" what sort of distances we talking? You'd be pleasently suprised at just how far normal wireless broadcasts!

Interested in how this goes as I've always wanted to do something like this myself.

Also as above what sort of distances you looking to go?

They use 11b because it has a lot greater range than 11g. If you get a decent DIRECTIONAL Yagi aerial, then you would be able to get roughly 10 miles with a boosted signal with a direct line of sight.

But yeah, what line of sight?

Could anyone give me an idea of costs involved for aerials/boosting etc? IE how far line of sight and how far non-line-of-sight can you get for how much money spent on boosters/aerials? Interesting to hear 11b has a greater range - might have to go 11b over 11g at home as our house has some thick stone walls and I'm in the converted stable at the back of the house whereas the router/AP would be right at the front through at least two or three brick/stone walls.

Sure, might as well have a go .

Are these instructions ones which you have played with yourself, or ones which are considered the best ones?

    Thanks
