First off, when you buy it you can use it *as is*.
Plug it in and it works, reliability, end of

If you want to go down the open-source route have a read of
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DD-WRT
    or
    http://wiki.openwrt.org/OpenWrtDocs

    Its time well spent, IMO

Even if you decide not to, the linksys WRT is regarded as one of the best routers in the home environment out there, even in its stock state.

For a no fuss approach, another vote for the Netgear DG834G

Amazon has them for £41.92 inc delivery:

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Netgear-DG83.../dp/B0000TZ8Z8

I've installed about 50 of these and never had an issue - they're about as plug and play as you can get.

I just noticed after the link Phil_P posted that its an ADSL router.
The WRT does not have an ADSL modem built in. If you have a ADSL modem with a Ethernet port on it - no problem.
If you have a USB modem, then you'll need a router with an ADSL modem built in.

I was going off the title of " Which Router?" and missed the opening post hinting it was an ADSL line . Sorry

Got a Netgear DG834PN and it just works! Took it out of the box, plugged it in and it sorted out the connection settings for me. Its Linksys predecessor however, well lets not go there.

Yeah for that price I'd go for a DG834G.
