Networking Printer

My ISP gives me 5 ip address to start out with, so my cable modem goes directly to my 21 port hub, that gives each comptuer an IP. I want to know if there is a way I can be on this computer and have something printed on my moms computer which has a printer, but its not local. Both machines are running Windows XP Home, is there any kind of program that will let me do this?

hp do web printing i think, it might be worth checking out their site. if your mom's computer is on the same network then you can simply share the printer... i think this would probably be better answered in the internet and networking forum, so i'll move it there... see if they have any better ideas.

I can't remember if file and printer sharing is enabled on XP home - I suspect it might not be. You might be able to share the printer from the command line using the net command - you can find out the syntax by typing net /? at command line

It would be something like net ue lpt1: \\yourmomspc /persistent:yes form yours and net share at the other end

yah but my home network isnt local, I might as well go out and buy a printer formyself, i'm getting into photography pretty soon and I need something nice to set me off, heh lookin at those Sony MiniDV cams I am. heh

tbh, if you dont mind forking out a little say £40 you could have a print server which would connect to your hub and any pc can access it (well whichever you've installed the software on )

I know throwing money at things is not the solution bit IMHO I think this would be your best option.

Ahh - I see the point about the local IP addresses now - was being thick..

Yeah - I think you need a NAT router so have private IP addresses. Cheaper option if you have a couple of old NICs floating about would be to have private IP addresses assigned to a 2nd card on each box. Not sure if that would work, but should in theory...

Listen guys, I have an 8 port router WITH a printer connection to do printer sharing over the network but I need each computer to have its own ip address. Rabs, I am very much interested in your printer server software idea.

Well tbh the print server is one option to your problem but has the big advantage of needing no pc to control it. My solution consists of a little box on the back my printer and install the software for the printserver on any machine I think would need to print.

Its's a quick and easy manage the printer and you wouldn't need a machine on 24/7 to use the printer, the printserver would take care of this..
