Lag spikes - wireless adapter issues?

I'm having some troubles with lag when I'm gaming. My ping sits below 20 fine and dandy until every couple of minutes I get a spike and nothing happens for about 1 second. It's the same on an Netgear ADSL wireless router and a Belkin cable router, and went away when I ran a cable, so I'm thinking it's my wireless adapter.

I was on a budget and got myself a cheapo Edimax PCI card. Does anyone know of any tweaks to keep the thing going? There seems to be lots of options but I can't see which one would help

I'm getting cable installed in a new flat within the week so am shopping for a new cable router as well, so should I just bin the cheap card and get a pair that will work together faultlessly? I was just going to pop down to pcworld and get myself something for £30 but I thought I should ask here first rather than having to put up with a year of spikes. Running a cable isn't an option I'm affraid - did it in my mum's place for the summer (mmmmm, power drill...) but this place is rented...

    Cheers!

I like the WRT54G and the other WRT products. You can change the firmware to make it do almost anything!!!
