Hi i have just moved house and my ISP tell me they wont go to my new place cos the drive is to long, anyway i get a very weak signal sometimes of my neighbour. he has said i can hitch on his if i can get a signal untill i get my self sorted out. Is there a long extension type cable i could use to mount the aerial on the outside of the house?

What kind of wireless device are you using? You can get better antennas that will grab a better signal.

Doesn't seem surprising, we lost all our extension points for phones in the house because the extra wiring was trashing an already weak signal..

Distance really does matter in broadband unless it's fibreoptic...

It is Virgin Media. the house is new and they say it isnt cost effective to put an extension to my house for them, I live miles from the BT exchange so will get about 128k internet!! i have just come from a 20 meg package. upsetting! i would like 2 aerials one for my netgear wifi card and one for his router. he also has a 20 meg line so it would be much more benneficial for us both. (i am going to give him money!) so original question, i need to aierials that can cover about 75meters

Linksys make a wireless AP/Bridge. This should allow you to bridge his network over to your home. 75 meters is far, but should be possible with the high-gain antenna (upgrade). You can quite easily manufacture your own antenna if you wish for a stonger directional signal, but is obviously more work. I would be tempted to try the high gain antennas first, and assuming you can get both units more or less "seeing each other" ie - on ajacent sides of the house, I think it would work fine.

yeah they say i can have it but they wont give me a speed, thats a bad sign!

The house i moved from was in the same road as the exchange, if i was on bt i would of got a great reception. i am now about 4 miles away from the exchange.

Any suggestions on a good aerial?

does a Wireless LAN card i have the netgear wg311 use reverse polarity?THIS is what i am thinking of getting and just hooking it up to my wg311 to piggie of my neighbour.

I don't know the answer to that, but you need to boost your neighbours signal as much as you do yours, although boosting his is more likey to give success as he has the transmitter. Make sense?

You can buy SMA connectors cheaply, and rig your own antenna if you wish. If you PM me a private email address I can send you a useful doc.

Send a letter to VM (a real one, not email).
A mate had the same issue with his drive and offered to pay the additional costs of installation. It worked out at something stupid in the region of £60 additional cost. In the long run, thats really not much (more so If you can't get ADSL / slow connection from it)

If your in a mobile 3G area you can always try a fixed rate 3G datacard option they are much more affordable now. Try Three, T-Mobile, Vodafone and Orange the all have them. They are desgined mainly for people on the move with laptops but can be useul for an alternative fixed access too.
