    Need better ping :)

Hi, the rest of the family uses a lot of bandwidth though youtube and a bit of p2p.

This makes fps gaming almost impossible, Whats the best way to go about fixing it? Looking round the Internet i heard about QoS, I carnt seem to find that on my router :/ (cheap tesco)

Ive also heard of d-link dgl-4300 with gamefuel and
    http://gamer.ubicom.com/guides/qos_t...ogy_guide.html
Which looks like their technology in in some of these devices (under solutions) , anyone used any of these before?

    Any advice is appreciated
    p.s I use ADSL

Hi...are you using a wireless connection for you computer's internet connection? If so, try a cable. It certainly makes a massive difference for me in round-trip time, particularly if there are a lot of other wireless routers sharing the airwaves.

even if you use QoS your ping will be not much better. To be honest the only way around it is to stop them using it!

You could try a router that has priority options for pakets to and from certain ports.

    Re: Need better ping :)

yeh some like the 2600plus will allow u to permanantly allocate a speed to each port on the router, thus u SHOULD have no interuptions regardless as to what they are doing.

Am i right? Or too optimistic

I would simply limit connections from the other IPs to times I wasnt gaming, but then I own and pay for the connection in my house

    Re: Need better ping :)

QoS would only work so far in this type of situation. It's not the magic cure which your looking for.

The best remedy for a problem such as this, is to sit down and speak to them and explain that you require the web unadulterated between a few set times so you can enjoy your FPS without any hinderence. Ask them nicely to schedule the downloads outside the gaming times.

    Re: Need better ping :)

Thanks for all the help guys, But because of circumstances i wont go into the person is at home 23.5 hours a day, 22 of those his computers downloading. Asking the person nicely isn't a option I've tried it before.

But i do practically pay for the Internet , also the main other user i don't think would notice as long as his damn youtube videos still load, That's why i was looking at these speed boosters, this in particular
    http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/produ...duct_uid=95418

So he can keep his speed constant, but it will cut off a portion for my game when i need it correct?

EDIT: Netlimiter looks intresting, but do u need to have it on all computers on the netork? (couldnt see anything about it on site)

Yes you do need it running on the computer you need to limit. Basically, when we used it we split the connection into 3.

    - If your basically paying for it, tell him if u wanna download, downlaod at night. Thats our rule in my student flat (unless its an mp3 or something)

    - Can u get cable? If so get ur own cable and he can keep the adsl

    - If he wont cooperate tell him, he owes u for line rental...and u need it by end of the week or u will just use it for urself.

Just a hint on the broadband booster thingy - if it works at all it certainly won't be worth it. If you seriously need to set bandwidth aside get yourself a Vigor and apply QoS, then VLAN him off with a dedicated share of the bandwidth you get.
