Assigning a network address to my PC to connect wirelessly to the net?

    Hi everyone,

First post here, so thought I'd start off with a problem.

I recently bought a wireless USB adaptor (Netgear WG111T), and followed the instructions. However, I can't connect to the internet. In the bottom right hand corner of my screen, my wireless icon shows the following message:

    Limited or no connectivity

The problem occurred because the network did not assign a network address to the computer.

I've checked on the properties for my connection and it's set to find the IP address automatically and the DNS server automatically as well.

A friend of mine told me I have to manually set my IP address and DNS server details...?

I'm running Windows XP Home with SP2 if that's of any relevance. I don't have any such problem with my wired connection.

Has anyone else run into this problem, and do you have a solution?

These settings were in place for my wireless set up:

    DHCP Enabled: Yes
    Auto configuration: Yes
    Auto config IP Address: 169.254.184.174
    Subnet mask: 255.255.0.0
    Default gateway: [blank]
    DNS Server: [blank]
    WINS Server: [blank]

I've already reset my router (BT Voyager 2110) to its factory settings and started over again, but it hasn't worked. Nothing wrong with my adaptor either. I took it to a friend's house and it worked fine with his PC and net connection.

If anyone has an idea what these setting mean, or if anything's wrong, please let me know. I'm about a couple more attempts away from calling BT to get a new phone line installed upstairs.

    Many thanks

If there's an 'Enable DHCP server' option on the BT router, you might want to check whether this is on or not.

Re: Assigning a network address to my PC to connect wirelessly to the net?

you won't get an ip address from your router if you get the password wrong. you can add a static address and test it that way.

for instance the routers on 192.168.1.1

you would set 192.168.1.2 on your put. subnet mask 255.255.255.0 and a default gateway to 192.168.1.1 and the dns set to 192.168.1.1 as well

you can take ip address details from your machine when its connected via a wired link

If you cant get the DHCP server working try going

Start > Control Panel > Network Connections

Then right click on the Netgear network adapter, it will probably have a name with Netgear in it

Click Properties, Then in the scroll box select "Internet Protocol TCP/IP" and click the properties button below it.

In the new window that opens you can force an IP address.

    http://www.plus.net/support/hardware/voyager2110_setup_guide.pdf

is a link to the setup guide for the 2110. your network key (which WILL be this if your back to factory settings) is on a sticker on the bottom of your router. make sure you have selected the correct type of encryption if your using the Netgears config rather than windows WZC as it may not automatically choose for you (128bit WEP).
